What time does school start?
  • The school day is from 7:40 a.m.-2:55 p.m.
Which classes are required? 
  • All students have a lunch and a study hall.
  • All students must complete 40 credits for graduation;
    1 credit is earned for each semester class passed.
  • The curriculum guide has information about specific required classes and an explanation of elective classes.
What if I need a schedule change?
  • See your guidance counselor within the first ten days of the semester.
What do I need for the first day of school?
  • You must have your ID at all times.
  • Classroom supplies/any honors class summer work.
  • Lunch/Lunch money/Debit card.
What do I do if I lose my schedule?
  • See your counselor.
  • There will be a $1 charge to print a new schedule.
What if I can’t make it to class on time?
  • Teachers understand the confusion the first few days and try to be flexible.
  • See your counselor or dean; he or she may have suggestions for a different route.
Is there a PE uniform?
  • YES.
  • The new BHS PE uniform can be purchased at BHS in the Athletic Office between 7:10 and 7:30 a.m. The cost is $10.00 per shirt and $10.00 per shorts.
What supplies do I need?
  • Individual teachers will provide students with a course syllabus and a supplies list.  In general, students should have a notebook, folder, pens and pencils for each class.  For math class, students will need a calculator.  For physical education, students will need a BHS or U-46 PE uniform.  Lastly, all students should have a bag or backpack to carry supplies, materials, and textbooks to and from school. 
What is an ABC (Achievement Boosted by Collaboration) Day?
  • ABC days give teachers an opportunity to work on curriculum and achievement by collaboration. ABC days occur once a month on a Tuesday.  Classes begin at 8:36.  Students may still ride their bus to arrive at school at their normally scheduled time. Students will be given the time to work in the commons or library to complete work.
What are Learning Targets?
  • BHS courses are working to create quarterly learning objectives and assessments.  The purpose of learning targets and their assessment quarterly is to provide tangible benchmark data to stakeholders in order to facilitate communication regarding student mastery.  This process will align curriculum, learning, and assessment in order to help us better serve the academic needs of students. 
Where do I find my summer packet?
  • Students may access summer packets for courses by visiting the BHS webpage.
What if I/my parent need a conference with a specific teacher?     
  • Teachers are available during the November Teacher Conferences.
  • Individual appointments can be made with specific teachers.  Call the BHS phone number to get the teacher’s extension (teacher extensions are also published in the Hawk Talk).
  • Contact your counselor if you need additional help setting up a meeting.
How do I get my textbooks?
  • All students receive a textbooks entered electronically into the BlueBear system from their content teacher for the respective term.


When should I see my Counselor/Social Worker?
  • Appointments should be made during your lunch or study hall.  You will need to get a pass from the Guidance Office Secretary.
  • While you may drop in, it is better to make an appointment.  Each counselor/social worker has a sign-up sheet in the Guidance Office.
  • Appointments can be made to talk about social, academic or career issues.
What if I/my parent need a conference with a specific teacher?
  • Teachers are available during the November Teacher Conferences.
  • Individual appointments can be made with specific teachers. Teacher contact information is located on the BHS webpage under the Academic tab.  Select the appropriate academic tab and scroll to locate teacher contact information.  Teachers may also be contacted via email and telephone.  Teachers should respond to email and voice messages within two school days.
  • Contact your counselor if you need additional help setting up a meeting.
What if I have an issue in one of my classes?
  • You should try talking to your teacher.
  • If there is still a problem, have your parent call the teacher.
  • If neither of these interventions has worked, see the department chairperson or counselor.
What kind of informational events are offered to parents?
  • A listing of events, dates, and times will be in the Academic Planner and in the Hawk Talk or online at BHS website.  Common events include:
    • Freshman Orientation Night in August
    • Back to School Night in September
    • Parent/Teacher Conferences in November
    • Informational Nights in Fall and early Spring for college and financial aid.


What if I’m too sick to attend school?
  • Your parent is responsible to call the Attendance Office by 10:30 a.m.  A voice mail message can be left from 4:00 p.m.- 7:00 a.m.
  • For absences longer than three days, parents should also call the Guidance Office to arrange to pick up homework.  A 24 hour lead time is needed.
  • Students out sick for more than two weeks may qualify for homebound tutoring with a district provided tutor.  A doctor’s signed medical excuse is required.
  • Once a student is recorded truant, you must contact your child’s dean to discuss clearing the truancy.
What if I need to arrive late or leave early?
  • Your parent must call in the absence two days in advance.
  • You need to sign in or out in the Attendance Office or be signed out by the Nurse’s Office.
What is HSAP?
  • The High School Attendance Program is a comprehensive attendance policy that dealswith two components of student absenteeism:  class tardies/truancies and overall absences.  Detailed information is available in the Academic Planner.  This program involves a step system of numerous interventions that actively involves the students, parents, and school staff, which includes teachers, counselors, and administrators.
Is there a dress policy?
  • YES.  Detailed information is available in the Academic Planner.  Coats, hats, gloves, revealing clothing or apparel promoting inappropriate activities are NOT to be worn in the building.
When can I use the library?
  • Before and after school.
  • You may use the library during your study hall time.  You must be present in the library before the bell and have a pass from one of your teachers.
May I carry a backpack?
  • YES.  Teachers set guidelines for their own classrooms.
May I listen to an I-Pod or media player?
  • YES.  Teachers set guidelines for their own classrooms.
  • Cell phone use is prohibited during school hours.
Where is the Lost & Found?
  • If lost articles are found, they are kept in the Attendance Office.
Do I need an ID every day?
  • YES.  If you forget your ID, you may get a temporary ID in the Attendance Office for 50 cents.  It is free if obtained by 7:30.
How do I get a Workers’ Permit?
  • Students who are 15 years old may pick up an application for a permit from the Guidance Office.

  • For information concerning careers and assistance with career choices, students may visit Career Cruising. To access Career Cruising:

May I bring a school age friend to school?
  • NO.  School age visitors are not allowed.
Can parents visit the school?
  • YES.  Please make arrangements in advance with the classroom teacher, and sign in at the Main Office upon arrival.
How do I handle locker problems?
  • Report all locker problems to the Main Office
  • All students are assigned a locker and combination lock.  Lost locks can be replaced in the Main Office for a minimal charge.
What is an AM, PM, or Saturday School?
  • These are disciplinary consequences assigned by the teacher or the Deans’ Office.
 May I leave campus for lunch?
  • NO.  District U-46 is a closed campus system.  Lunches may be purchased or brought from home.
How do I find out my bus number, pick-up and drop-off times?
  • This information is on your schedule and I.D.
  • If there is a problem, call (630) 372-4700, Ext. 4753.
Where should I be dropped off and picked up at school?
  • Have your parent use the Schick Road parking lot or the inside lot near the cafeteria.
  • School begins at 7:40 a.m., arrive early and avoid traffic.


How do I know a teacher’s grading system?
  • Teachers usually inform their classes of the grading policy and classroom expectations within the first week of school.
When are grades reported?
  • Your handbook will have the exact dates for progress reports and report cards.
  • Progress reports are mailed home around the fifth week of a quarter.
  • Report cards are mailed at the end of the quarter (each quarter is nine weeks).
How can I tell if have successfully passed from year to year?
  • “Passing” is based on the number of credits accrued.  See the Academic Planner for yearly credit requirements.
What happens if I receive an incomplete grade?
  • After three weeks the grade is automatically changed to an E if the work is not completed.
  • Extensions may be granted by individual teachers.
How can I keep track of my current grade in classes?
  • Approximately 90% of the BHS faculty maintains an online grade book at www.mygradebook.com.  This link is also available via the BHS webpage.  Teachers will provide students with directions to login and view grades 24 hours at their convenience.  Students should share this information with parents.  Parents may also contact teachers for this information.
What standardized tests do I take at Bartlett?
  • 8th grade (middle school) – MAP Test & EXPLORE Test.
  • 9th grade – MAP Test.
  • 10th grade – PLAN Test.
  • 11th grade – All students take the PSAE (which includes the ACT), some may take the PSAT.
  • 11th & 12th grades – ACT and SAT tests for college admissions.
  • Please note, college athletes must take the ACT on a Saturday national testing day.
How can I prepare for standardized tests?
  • BHS students have access to the following websites to assist with PLAN, PSAE, and ACT test preparation:

Do I have to be involved in clubs/activities/sports?
  • Students are encouraged to be involved in activities, but it is not mandatory.
  • Check the BHS website, or with the activities and/or athletic director for information.
  • An activity bus is available at no charge.
