Parent Survey
Dear BHS Parents,

During the 2012-2013 year, BHS will be completing the accreditation process via AdvancED. AdvanceEd is the authority on education organizational effectiveness and is the world's largest accrediting and school improvement organization. All U-46 high schools will be completing this process during 2012-2013. The first step in this process is to complete a survey of all BHS stakeholders.

Thus, in an effort to improve system practices, Bartlett High School is conducting a Parent Survey. We value your opinion and ask that you take the time to complete this survey.

In order to complete the survey,
please go to: http://www.advanc-ed.org/survey/public/5369163

Please be assured that your responses to this survey will be anonymous. Your honest opinion is appreciated. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

Yearbooks
Yearbook distribution is this week. Please check www.bartletthsyearbook.com before May 16 to confirm that you have purchased a yearbook. All you need is your ID number.

The staff will have a limited number of yearbooks available to sell at distribution, which will take place May 16, May 17, and May 18. Please bring $50 cash. Also, be aware that the yearbook sold out the past two years, so plan to purchase your book on Wednesday or Thursday to ensure that a yearbook will still be available.

QUESTIONS: e-mail Jeff Horler (sponsor) at jeffhorler@u-46.org.

Towel Service Will Be Discontinued
Parents and Students of U-46:

Over the past several months, School District U-46 Athletic and Physical Education administration have been reviewing the use of the towel service in these programs throughout the school year weighing the costs and benefits. We have determined that the cost of the towel service does not equate with the amount of use of the service for each of the high schools. The funds would be better utilized for students in all of the Physical Education and athletic programs in U-46. We also concluded that many other surrounding school districts no longer provide the service because of the similar expense and use issue.

After careful consideration, effective at the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year in August, U-46 will be discontinuing the towel service, and all five high schools will no longer be providing towels from this service. Over the next several months, the high schools will be communicating and proactively seeking next steps and alternative practices in the physical education and athletic programs for students and we will inform the parents about those adjustments. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

Respectfully,
Jeff Bral
Athletic Director

National Certification
B.H.S. seniors Alexa Abaroa, Manuel Rodriguez, Marina Theisen and Nick Wells earn National Certificate of Achievement. Earning the ProStart* National Certificate of Achievement means that these students demonstrated a strong foundation in the basic management and culinary skills considered critical by industry leaders. In addition to passing two national exams offered by the National Restaurant Association, these students completed 200 hours of volunteer work and at least 200 hours of work in the industry. Dr. Torres presented the students with their certificates.

2012 Athletic Camp information is now available on the Athletic website

Thank You, Parents!
May 14, 2012 - Parents, we need your support in making sure your students attend school every day! In order to reach our goal of increasing the academic achievement of all students, we need to make sure our students are in school each day and on time to every class. Bartlett High School's average daily attendance (ADA) for last week was 93.28, which is a drop from the week before. Bartlett High School would like to keep our ADA above 95.0%, so please require your students to come to school everyday less they are ill. BHS continues to have the highest ADA of all the high schools in the district for the year. Once again parents, thank you for your support!

Vacation and Attendance Update

Dear Parents,

It has been decided by School District U-46 that vacations will no longer be considered an excused absence, but will count as unexcused.

The language in the handbooks is below.

The law requires that children be in attendance at school whenever the child's school is open for instruction. The only approved vacation periods for School District U-46 occur during Winter Recess, Spring Recess, and Summer Vacation. Therefore, extended absences and/or vacations during the school year are discouraged. Valuable educational experiences are lost and grades may be affected. If an extended absence/vacation during the school year are unavoidable, the absence will be marked as unexcused and teachers will not be required to provide assignments during this absence.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
  MR Tip of the Week:
Please clean up the tables and the floor during your time in the cafeteria; even if you are in there before school. Everyone deserves a clean place to study and eat.

Juniors and seniors with the warm weather approaching please keep in mind the parameters for the privilege of going outside during your lunch. You must have your ID properly displayed around your neck (no temp IDs). You must clean up after yourselves. You must stay on the sidewalk (not in the parking lot). You can not go past the annex doors to the west. Lastly, you must exit and enter through the annex doors, not the student entrance.

Handbook Sale: Is your handbook defaced, lost, or in poor condition? Handbooks are now on sale for $1.00 in the main office. You are strongly encouraged to purchase a new handbook if you need one.

Show your school spirit by wearing Green and Blue EVERY Friday!

Senior Final Examination Exemptions: Seniors will be exempt from their second semester (2012) finals provided that they meet the following criteria:
  • Meet or exceed in all sections of the PSAE
  • Have a B- or better grade average in the course.
  • Have less than four (4) absences (excused or unexcused).
  • Have less than seven (7) tardies 2nd semester.
  • No Out of School suspensions 2nd semester.
Students may submit an appeal form to their Dean if they believe an attendance error has been made. Forms will be due to the Dean by 3 pm on 5/17/12. You will be notified of the appeal decision on 5/18/12.

From the Nurse's Office: If you are sick, you must be evaluated by the nurse to be excused to leave the building. Calling or texting your parent to pick you up because you are sick is not permitted! If you leave the building without seeing the nurse, you will earn a Saturday School and/or be marked truant for the classes you miss.

Attention Students:
- Please remember to lock up your valuables during PE and make sure the locker is completely closed.
- Make a conscience effort to keep an eye on your belongings, especially in the cafeteria and when you leave class to use the washroom.
- Lastly, report suspicious activity to your teachers and to Officer Rybaski.

Phone Insubordination: Phones are not to be seen or heard. Violation of this policy results in your phone being taken away and you earn a phone consequence. Failure to give up your phone escalates the consequences to insubordination. The first insubordination offense will result in a day of in school suspension. The second offense will result in an out of school suspension. Please do not turn a phone offense into an insubordination offense.

Community Service: students, please be aware that in lieu of consequences you may serve community service with any staff member in the building. You must have the staff member fill out a community service form from the Deans' Office and hand it in on or before the consequence is due. No late forms will be accepted.

Students, please read your Plasco pass. Detentions, Saturday School and days of In School Suspension can be issued without seeing a Dean. Failure to serve these consequences will result in escalated consequences.

Random Weapon Searches - Periodically, the Deans' Office will conduct random classroom searches for illegal materials or contraband. This is done to ensure the safety of both students and staff. Classes will be randomly selected for a search. A metal detector will be used during the search. Backpacks and purses will also be searched. This is not done because we believe we have a problem, but rather to prevent problems.

Bartlett fans - Bartlett High School states that fans must wear shirts at all sporting events. Gentlemen must wear shirts. Ladies and gentlemen must wear shirts that cover their chest and stomach. Shorts must be fingertip length just like during the school day. Students not dressed appropriately will not be admitted into the game or maybe asked to leave. Also, inappropriate language will not be allowed. Inappropriate language will cause students to be ejected from the game. Finally, students must be able to produce a school ID upon request.

Parental Reminder: Student cell phones are to be off between 7:40 AM and the end of the student's school day. Parents should avoid sending text messages to their student during these hours. A student receiving or sending a text message during these hours is violating school rules and may face disciplinary action. This rule is in place to minimize disruptions in the learning environment and protect students. More>
