  Spain Trip 2008

Richard Johnson (Social Studies) and Gina Schiada (Spanish) traveled to Spain from June 18 - July 2 with ten BHS students. The first week the students toured Madrid, Segovia, Toledo, Granada, and Sevilla, where the students learned about Spanish history, dance, art, music, religion, and food. The second week the students stayed with individual families in the surrounding communities of Huelva where they had the unique opportunity to speak Spanish exclusively while being immersed in the Spanish culture.

Attached below is a email that Dr. Skinkis received from a teacher (Milwaukee, WI) who was on the same trip with her students:

"Hola Dr. Skinkis,
My name is Mary and I am a Spanish teacher at [a] High School in Milwaukee, WI. I just returned from a trip to Spain using the company [withheld]. On the trip, I had the privilege of traveling with two teachers from your school, Gina Schiada and Richard Johnson. I am writing this email to let you know how impressed I am with them as teachers and the obvious success of the Spanish program at Bartlett High. Throughout the trip, Schiada and Johnson's passion for travel and student learning was obvious. Their rapport with the students was excellent and the additions they brought to the trip were amazing. Each evening the students were excited to create their video blog and share what they had experienced with their parents via the internet. The students’ use of Spanish was outstanding and they were all respectful and well-behaved. Because of Gina's prior travel experience, we were all able to learn more about each of the places we visited than we would have by using what was provided by the company alone. Because I was so impressed with the use of technology on the trip, Richard took the time (and his personal laptop, etc!) to help me start a wikispace like the one they used for the Bartlett program while the students were staying with their respective host families.

In short, I just wanted to let you know how wonderful of an experience the trip to Spain was for me and my students, in large part because of your teachers. They are both a true asset to your students and school."
Gracias,
Mary

Great Job to Mr. Johnson, Ms. Schiada, and all the students who participated in this great learning experience.
