Parent Involvement:

A supportive parent community backs the work of the Elgin High School faculty and staff. When help is needed the parents are there to answer the call. Parents have stepped forward to make Homecoming an event at the school. The parade and other activities have come back with great enthusiasm and student participation. Parents from the diverse groups that make up the high school community are also involved. Parents of ELL students attended a meeting to discuss the new ELL classes at the school and it was a standing room only crowd.

In addition Elgin High boasts ever growing alumni who are willing to give back to the school. They have raised money to support school efforts, and even are a part of the Elgin High School web site with a page of their own.

Community Involvement:

  • Elgin High School has been awarded state recognition for the past several years as a State Service Learning School. Our students are involved in many environmental programs and have been invited to attend and present at conferences. EHS was invited to present at the International Conference on Solid Waste Management in Philadelphia, PA., the first school to do so in the history of the conference.
  • EHS Environmental Science students successfully implemented a reading initiative in the community. High school students select children's stories that highlight scientific principles. Students then prepare activities that demonstrate the principle through hands-on, multi-sensory activity. In the first year of the reading program, 35 EHS students read 17 books to over 500 younger students (ages 3-14).
  • “Read Across America Night” was organized and hosted by EHS for a family evening of books, food and activities. Students also organized a night hike, bonfire and presented 17 stories to an array of parents, children and community leaders.
  • Elgin High School is also the home school of Illinois Teacher of The Year (2004-2005), Deborah Perryman.
  • Police Liaison Officer
