Timber Trails Elementary School is located in a quiet neighborhood with acres of land surrounding it. As you walk down to the end of the hallway windows open to the view with sunlight brightening the area. Right outside the office student work is highlighted and put on display for everyone to see. The classes take turns putting work up in this prominent space.
The students in this school represent a diverse population. This diversity is an integral part of the personality of Timber Trails School. ELL (English Language Learners) classes are included in physical education, art and music classes and integrated in general education classrooms when it is appropriate. In addition to the ELL classes, the school is also home to several special education students. All the students in the school are part of the Timber Trails family. As the principal, Tom Flanigan puts it, “These are all our children.” To underscore this commitment the principal’s weekly newsletters are translated to ensure Spanish-speaking parents will get the information. A bilingual liaison connects the Hispanic parents to the school.
Parent activities and an active PTO bring families into the school. Volunteering in classrooms or helping with Market Day the parents are working to improve the students’ experiences at Timber Trails. Since the school opened in 2004, parents have been involved. They have raised funds to buy materials and built a playground. They supported the installation of a kiln for art classes. They volunteer to read to primary children and support other classroom activities.
The staff at Timber Trails is a collaborative and involved group. Teachers meet monthly for formal team meetings and work together outside of this time also. They serve on building, technology, literacy, school improvement and social committees, and are involved in many of the after school activities provided to support student learning. The faculty at this school strives "to provide an education that nurtures and challenges all students to maximize their individual potential to become responsible, productive, and contributing members of our community and society."
