Hanover Countryside Elementary School - No Excuses
|
At Hanover Countryside Elementary School in Streamwood the there is a great deal of excitement about college. While the students are still young they are exposed to the idea that learning is very important to their future. Principal Leslie Kleiman reminds parents to talk with their children about what they did in school in school that will help them go to college. Every elementary student has a MAP goal for reading and math that parents should be aware of and encourage students to reach.
Hanover Countryside sends the message that post-high school education is the goal for every child. Every classroom has its own college. In fact, the second graders of Mrs. Kimberly Scanlan’s class have been "adopted" by Knox College and its president, Roger Taylor. Over the past year, the students have corresponded with President Taylor, sending him letters and pictures, some of which hang in his office. He, in turn, has sent them pictures of Knox, its people, and the college’s historic connection to Abraham Lincoln.
On Thursday, December 4, he did more than send items to the students, he came in person. President Taylor delivered special Knox College T-shirts and worked with the students on a personal aspirations project. He connected with these students in part because he understands going to college may not be something students are thinking about. He is a first-generation college graduate from central Illinois who received his degree from Knox College in 1963.
