What is Elgin to Elgin?f

Elgin to Elgin is a community driven program based on the idea of unity. What is it exactly? Well, it is worldwide reading program to promote literacy everywhere. It is run by a group of environmental science students at Elgin High School, Elgin, IL USA. Primarily, it is a program focused around getting all Elgin municipalities in the world to join and host their own reading nights for children. Ultimately, the program hopes to have anyone join in its force, whether Elgin or not, or to startup similar programs.

 

If you decide to join us, you will be engaging in Service Learning. Service learning is a teaching strategy that ties state learning standards to a community need. Elgin High School has been utilizing service learning for many years now and is a State Mentoring School. Our school and district will be more than happy to assist you in creating a high quality reading project that will inspire and motivate your students, staff and community. How Elgin to Elgin Got Started f

Elgin High School (Illinois) has been organizing and implementing “Family Reading Nights” since March of 2002. The tradition began with a news paper article detailing the results of the first “high stakes tests” associated with the federal education law widely referred to as “No Child Left Behind.” That year our District had 8 schools on the early warning list, of those 8 schools, 6 were Elgin High School feeder schools.

 

Two students brought the article to class and discussed their concerns. They made such a passionate plea, that by the end of the day, they had twenty peers volunteer to research raising reading scores. The team then implemented a program to educate the community and hosted their very first reading night in coordination with the National Program “Read Across America."

 

The program moved farther along in late 2006, when other students wanted to take it to the next level. The students decided to do this by expanding the program region wide, national wide, and worldwide. Thus Elgin to Elgin was born and launched in February of 2007.
