U-46 Web Publishing Procedures

The following document addresses procedures to be followed when staff create web pages, blogs or wikis that pertain to their classes, schools, jobs and/or U-46. For the purposes of this document, these activities will collectively be referred to as Web publishing.

Publishing Considerations:

Audience: The audience for district/school web publishing is the general public seeking information about U-46 and/or a particular school. In the case of classroom web publishing, the audience will primarily be students and parents of students in that class. Remember that a global audience does potentially have access to anything that is published on the web.

Accuracy: Double-check all information for accuracy. Inaccurate information lowers the reader's trust. Accuracy includes correct spelling, especially any listing of names, places and dates. Web publishers are responsible for accurate and appropriate content.

Clarity: Be brief, clear and informative. The purpose of publishing on the Web is to disseminate and update information efficiently and effectively.

Graphics and Attachments: Excessive use of clipart, animations, PDFs and other types of files and multimedia should be avoided to minimize the time required for pages to be transmitted and loaded. Older computers/browsers may not be able to load graphic or file intensive web pages.

Content Standards:

Resources published on the Web will contain material that directly supports district/school curriculum, program, values, mission and/or vision. Each Web publisher has the responsibility to review materials before posting them to check for spelling, informational accuracy, and grammatical accuracy. Web publishers will adhere to the following standards:

  • Decisions on Web publishing should be based on appropriateness of the resource, proper communications etiquette, and consistency with established district policies.
  • Ethical considerations and copyright laws will be applied when utilizing graphics, pictures, clip art, textual material, or any other resource, which is not the Web publisher's own work .
  • Web publishing will not contain illegal, immoral, insubordinate, or defamatory material.
  • Web publishing will conform to school board policies and established school guidelines.

Procedures

Prior to web publishing, staff must participate in a professional development activity (to be determined by the Curriculum department). As part of the professional development, the staff person will develop a plan for what they are going to do and why they are going to do it. They will also review this procedure in depth, as well as learn the tools that can be used for Web publishing.

Postings & web publishing can only be done on district approved sites & servers (see below). This limitation will be implemented via the District Web content filtering system.

Content that does not conform to district standards will be removed by the web publisher at the request of administration.
