Reading in Our Classrooms   -
Julie Horn's Class

Julie Horn's classroom was filled with activity and the sounds of construction. The building was being done by kindergarteners busily engaged in a hands-on learning activity. The staff of an area home improvement store was there to help them build their own pencil boxes. This project was the part of a lesson on “Community Life” and ultimately, reading.

When the children finished their building project, they turned their experience into a story. Photos were taken of the children with their pencil box and the children wrote a sentence or two about their activity to go with the picture. Their stories allowed the children to share their unique experience with others while reinforcing their reading and writing skills.
