Reading and Our Students

Teachers in U-46 classrooms work hard everyday to make the goals outlined in the Curriculum Roadmap come to life for their students and become a part of their skills development. This section of the web site will provide a glimpse into those classrooms. We envision lessons from all grade levels, covering a variety of reading skills and learning experiences being added to this page. These classroom stories will provide a meaningful resource for parents and teachers as they work to help all students become successful readers with a lifelong love of reading.

Julie Horn's students are young readers at the kindergarten level but the experiences this lesson provided can translate to many grade levels. The students had a hands-on experience building a pencil box that became the centerpiece for many reading and writing activities.

Amy Freiberg's second graders were studying the rainforest. Amy took a different approach to teaching vocabulary that had students working together using predicting skills, context clues and their prior knowledge to determine word meaning. Her activities made the reading experience more meaningful for her students.
