| Reading is the process in which gains new knowledge from written text.
The goal of the U-46 Reading Program is to ensure students acquire the reading skills they need not only to succeed academically during their years in the district, but to have the skills they need to confidently enter a college, an apprenticeship program, or the workplace after graduation. Strong reading skills will make it possible for students to continue to expand their knowledge, to understand new concepts, to research topics of interest and to enjoy the written word as lifelong learners.
This site is designed to provide general background information on reading and, more specifically, reading in U-46. Resources are also provided for parents to assist them in helping their child.
Below are descriptions of the sections of this web site: General Information Section - discusses the reading process, the Illinois State Standards, the five critical areas of reading instruction as well as the skills students need to be successful readers. The link between reading and writing is also discussed. Reading in U-46 - provides a short summary of reading instruction at each grade level throughout the district. There is also information on the Curriculum Roadmap developed by U-46 and the Stupski Foundation. The Roadmap aligns the work of the district with the Illinois Standards, a necessary piece to meet the mandates of No Child Left Behind.
Reading and Our Students - provides examples of reading instruction in our schools as well as information on several of the reading programs available. This section of the site will continue to change and expand to share examples of reading instruction in additional grades.
Resources - provides links to reading resources available to parents. New to this section are the Parent-Friendly Version of the Literacy Standards developed by the U-46 Citizens' Advisory Council | ||
