Curriculum Roadmap? Standards? Goals? Units? Assessment? Strategies? These are some of the puzzle pieces that are put together every year by every teacher as they develop their instruction. The question becomes “What is the best way to fit it all together?”
The answer is a curriculum map. Unlike the Curriculum Roadmap that provides an outline of what skills students are expected to learn at each grade level, it is a “word snapshot” of what is going on in the individual classroom. It captures the activities, strategies and materials used; and more specifically it adds the assessment framework to map out grade level curriculum.

| The purpose of curriculum mapping is to provide a focused teaching structure with an end result of a vertical and horizontal alignment so all staff is aware of explicit goals, major ideas and projects at each grade level. It is all mapped out so teachers can see at a glance what students work on before and after they are in their class so projects and lessons are not replicated, but flow from one year to the next. It also helps grade level teachers to align their teaching to ensure they are all working on the “same page”. That is not to say each teacher will teach exactly the same way as their neighbors, but that they will address the same content.
Stages of Curriculum Mapping
Layer 1 – General overview of what is taught monthly based on grade level curriculum.
Layer 2 – Curriculum Roadmap language and strategies overlay the basic curriculum at this stage making the map more specific.
Layer 3 – Assessment framework skills and strategies are added at this stage to determine when specifically the concepts and goals will be taught.
Layer 4 – The personal and building resources are finally added, personalizing the curriculum map for each teacher.
