Academics in Action

  • The curriculum in U-46 follows the Illinois State Learning Standards. 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students will be tested on the Language Arts and Mathematics Standards in the spring. Fourth grade students will also be tested on Science Standards and fifth grade students will be tested in writing. 

    Reading and Language Arts 

    A Balanced Literacy approach is used in the classroom. This includes Reading , Writing, Listening and Speaking skills, Word Study, and Vocabulary Building .

    • Using strategies for constructing meaning before, during, and after reading will help students connect what they read now with what they have learned in the past. Students who read well will have a strong foundation for learning in all areas of life.
    • Reading instruction will follow the U-46 Road Map along with the Balanced Literacy Framework and will include Read-Alouds, Shared reading, Guided reading, and independent reading. Classroom instruction integrates the Making Meaning reading comprehension program with other strategies. Students may keep a reading journal for reflection.
    • At home independent reading goals have been established for each grade. Students will be responsible for daily/weekly reading logs to record their reading.
    • Writing instruction will follow the U-46 Road Map along with the Balanced Literacy Framework and will focus on the Writing Process. Being A Writer and La Lectura are the instructional programs classes will follow. Expository, Persuasive, Narrative, and Descriptive writing will be introduced and used for a variety of purposes. Students keep writing samples in a personal writing folder.
    • Word Study and Vocabulary Building will be a part of the daily work in both language arts and other content areas. The purpose is to help students gain understanding of language as it is used in daily reading and conversation and to apply this knowledge to written work. Words Their Way will be used at all grade levels to help build spelling and phonics skills. Developing a strong academic vocabulary, in line with the U-46 Road Map, will be stressed at each grade level. Students may keep these words in a binder to be used throughout their elementary school years. 


    The mathematics program follows the U-46 Road Map and includes number sense, estimation, measurement, patterns and relationships, algebra, geometry, data and probability. The Everyday Mathematics program is used to teach these concepts and skills. Students will use classroom manipulatives , calculators, and student journals/workbooks to develop these skills. A game format is used in this program to help students understand mathematical concepts. Home Links and/or Study Links will be sent home to reinforce classroom instruction. 

    Social Studies 

    The Social Studies curriculum will help prepare students to become informed, effective, and concerned citizens. Students will study geography, history, sociology, economics, and government. Students will look at their own cultural roots and those of others through the study of communities and civilizations. The McGraw-Hill texts are used in first through sixth grade. 


    The Science program follows the principles of Scientific Inquiry and the scientific process skills. Students will use the Full Options Science System (FOSS) program along with Scott Foresman Science Readers to develop these principles. Life Science, Physical Science, Earth Science, and Health are included in the Science curriculum.
