The Illinois State Board of Education has identified and adopted Illinois Professional Teaching Standards (IPTS) for a variety of different classified educators that touch children's lives each day in our schools.

Professional teaching standards provide educators with a common language and a shared vision around their professional practice. Further, the IPTS help educators to:

• identify areas of professional growth 
• guide the design and implementation of professional development experiences 
• link teacher preparation programs with on-going development as one secures a teaching position
• have a firm handle on what is expected as a professional in Illinois for formative and summative assessment purposes
