Congratulations to U-46’s own “Professional Rockstar” - Superintendent Dr. Suzanne Johnson.

Dr. Johnson was honored this week at the Elgin Image Awards, presented by the Enhancing Elgin Committee of the Elgin Area Chamber’s Elgin Development Group. The awards recognize outstanding individuals, businesses, and organizations who are making a powerful difference in the City of Elgin by promoting the positives of why Elgin is a great place to live, work, learn, do business, get involved, visit, and enjoy. 

Dr. Johnson took home the win in the "Professional Rockstar” category for her extraordinary leadership, dedication, and lifelong commitment to the students, staff, and families of our community. 

“Dr. Johnson’s connection to U-46 runs deep,” read the introduction for Dr. Johnson. “A proud graduate of Elgin High School and the child of U-46 educators, she began her career as a middle school language arts teacher and has risen through the ranks to lead the state’s second-largest district. Her leadership is defined by her hands-on approach, visible presence, and genuine care for everyone she encounters. From visiting classrooms and stepping into various employees’ roles, to staying late at events to assist staff with cleanup, she demonstrates that every person in the district matters. All Means All.

“Under Dr. Johnson’s guidance, U-46 has launched a strategic plan and the Unite U-46 initiative, which secured community support for a $180 million dollar bond referendum. This funding is transforming learning spaces across the district, including building the first new middle school in Elgin since 1959, expanding preschool access, and providing equitable opportunities for all students.

“Nominated by her U-46 colleagues, Suzanne’s dedication fosters a culture of service, citizenship, and responsibility. She emphasizes collaboration, listens with empathy, and ensures that every decision prioritizes students and families, while inspiring staff and the broader community to do the same.

“Dr. Johnson’s legacy is one of vision, impact, and authentic connection. She shows us all how leadership - rooted in care, integrity, and community engagement - can create lasting, positive change. For generations of students and families in Elgin, her influence will be felt for years to come.
