Distance Learning Phase II Launches on Tuesday, March 31
Mensaje en español se encuentra al final.
March 28, 2020
Dear School District U-46 Students, Parents, Guardians and Staff,
On Tuesday, March 31, we will launch Phase II of our Distance Learning Days, an entirely online approach to education that our team has developed over the past two weeks. The way we learn, study and teach will look and feel different than our usual school days. Our 350 school buses will remain huddled in place on Shales Parkway. Our principals, teachers and staff members will be opening laptops rather than school doors and students will be logging on and entering portals rather than actual classrooms. I urge us all to remain patient with ourselves and each other as we navigate this new experience.
As a society, we are all handling multiple new factors and stressors in our lives. Many of us are caring for children and loved ones at home while also working and learning new skills - all amid a global pandemic. We know that learning new technology can be challenging and we - parents, students and educators - are all at different skill and comfort levels. This is a good time to practice a growth mindset and simply try to improve each day and do our best.
This is also a great time to learn from each other, to be curious learners, to have fun and to work on projects independently and with peers online.
Teachers have been working on their lessons plans and many have already connected with students. Many of our faculty members met for voluntary online professional development on Friday and they will be able to access another full day of professional development tomorrow, Monday, beginning at 8 a.m.
There are a few guidelines to shape this learning, and more updates will be forthcoming. The below information - and more - is also posted on our COVID-19 website under Distance Learning at: https://www.u-46.org/learning
Logging On
Beginning Tuesday, students may access online learning platforms such as but not limited to: Google Classroom, Google Meets, Canvas, Zoom, Screencastify, Flipgrid, Kami, Go To Meeting. Use of these platforms may include video and audio of your student, other students, support staff, and teachers.The Illinois State Board of Education has approved these resources for Distance Learning. If parents do not want their child(ren) to use these online learning platforms, they must inform the District by submitting by 9 a.m. April 1 this form: https://forms.gle/vfWTvhG64n6ngk7n8
Teachers will be in communication with parents and/or students by Tuesday to outline how lessons will be shared and assignments submitted. Our teachers’ guidance and practices will evolve as they learn what works best for their students.
Our goal in our first phase of Chromebook distribution was to ensure every family has at least one U-46-issued device. Weeks ago, we placed an emergency order for nearly 3,900 additional Chromebooks. When those devices arrive, we will begin a second phase of distribution. More details on the second phase of Chromebook distribution is forthcoming. Until then, we recommend that families with one device please work out a schedule that allows students to show they are present during the Distance Learning Day through the attendance reporting process for middle and high school students (see below) and through evidence of work that can be completed at any time.
Our Information Services team has created a by-appointment-only repair service for U-46-issued devices and Chromebooks with hardware issues. Read more about this service on our COVID site here. This service is not for personal devices and we ask that families start their troubleshooting with the directions and resources under our COVID site before seeking an appointment.
Elementary Families and Absence Reporting
Teachers will reach out to students with directions on daily lessons and assignments.
Teachers may take attendance. Parents should enter their child’s absence via our Elementary Absence Reporting Tool ( live link to be shared by March 31) if your child is unable to participate in Distance Learning on a given day. Any absence notifications will be processed by 10 a.m. such that the attendance data in Infinite Campus is updated to record any absences received.
Teachers would then have the ability to modify attendance records from “present” to “absent” (or vice versa) at the end of the day based on whether a student has met the engagement criteria as defined for the day.
Middle, High School and Attendance Reporting
Teachers will reach out to students on daily lessons and assignments.
- For these older students with more familiarity with Chromebooks and Infinite Campus, we will ask students to log into the IC portal to record their daily attendance by 10 a.m. each day. These students will also receive a daily email attendance reminder with a link to the Infinite Campus portal.
- If students have not completed this step by 10 a.m., the student’s attendance will be changed from “present” to “absent” for all periods.
- Teachers will have the ability to modify attendance records from present to absent (or vice versa) at the end of the day based on whether a student has met the engagement criteria as defined.
Grading and Assessments
We will continue to implement across all grade levels the best practices of Standards-Based Learning and Assessment. Our grading system will focus on providing the following:
- regular opportunities for students to engage in meaningful learning activities as evidenced by ongoing assessments;
- regular feedback to students (rubric scoring, qualitative feedback, formative, or in-process grades in Infinite Campus, next steps, constructive improvement recommendations);
- student opportunities to reassess as needed to meet proficiency; and
- entering feedback into Infinite Campus or other learning platforms.
At the secondary level, teachers will enter assignments in the IC gradebook. We will reinforce the option of attaching links, and PDF files to assignments. At this level we will be looking for engagement, ways to give students constructive feedback that helps them understand what they’ve mastered and where they can still grow and reach a higher level of academic performance. Parents and students can expect to hear from teachers if they have not checked in daily, and if there are missing assignments.
We have previously shared our student and teacher expectations for our Distance Learning Days. Those can be found on our COVID-19 website under Distance Learning.
Yesterday, the State Board of Education provided guidance to school districts on how to implement remote learning, including expectations for grading assignments and assigning final grades. We will follow up with all families when we have finalized our own grading expectations for this period of distance, or remote, learning.
All questions can continue to be sent through our Let’s Talk system.
Already, we have seen great collaboration, innovation, and compassion for and among our students, families, teachers, and staff. We expect that will only expand in the days ahead.
All my best,
Superintendent Tony Sanders
28 de marzo
Estimados Estudiantes, Padres, Tutores Legales, y Personal,
- oportunidades a menudo donde los estudiantes puedan participar en actividades de aprendizaje significativas como lo demuestran las evaluaciones continuamente;
- retroalimentación frecuente a los estudiantes (rúbrica de puntajes, retroalimentación cualitativa, formativa, o calificaciones en proceso dentro de Infinite Campus, próximos pasos, sugerencias constructivas para una mejora);
Superintendente Tony Sanders
