U-46 WEPS Radio Station to Host Open House October 15
October 9, 2019
U-46 high school students next week will tour the District’s historic radio station, WEPS 88.9 FM, and learn more about the radio industry from several Chicago-area radio professionals.
The October 15 event will begin at 4 p.m. with tours of the WEPS radio station, where attendees can view the various equipment used to broadcast radio shows at the former Elgin High School, now the Dream Academy, on Gifford Street in Elgin.
The tour will be followed by a panel discussion featuring five local radio professionals. The guests are WBBM reporter Bernie Tafoya, WBEZ reporter Susie An, WRMN producer and host Mark Bialek, AM 560/AM 1160 producer and South Elgin High School radio professional Justin Kosek, and broadcast media producer and Elgin High School radio professional Virginia Bailey. The panel discussion will begin in the auditorium of the Dream Academy around 5 p.m.
“This event serves as a kick-off for our high school radio clubs as they begin producing shows to broadcast on WEPS,” said CEO Tony Sanders. “We’re proud of the history of WEPS and the opportunities it gives students to develop their communication skills. We hope you tune in and listen to our students’ shows on weekdays at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.”
WEPS is Illinois’ oldest operating non-commercial, educational radio station and has been broadcasting for more than 60 years. Listeners can tune into 88.9 FM to listen to student-produced radio shows from the District’s five high schools Monday-Friday at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Student broadcasts include a variety of shows from school news, sports, musical, speech performances, and entertainment. Along with student shows, WEPS broadcasts content from Wisconsin Public Radio throughout the week.
