Feb. 21, 2019
As part of School District U-46 events celebrating Black History Month, more than a dozen high school seniors were honored Tuesday night at Larkin High School in Elgin. The recognition was part of the District’s inaugural Black History Month event and featured Robert Jackson, an acclaimed motivational speaker and educator who talked to U-46 families about how students can succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
District officials and Mr. Jackson recognized 16 African-American students from across U-46’s five high schools who have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.4 or above as of last semester. The students honored were Rachel Caldwell, William Morrow, Alexia Smith and Maleah Washington, all of Elgin High School; Brandon Christopher of Streamwood High School; Kendra Davis, Alia Echols, Derrick Echols, Jayda Ford, Hayden Groesser, Makayla Hall-Lee, all of South Elgin High School; Kaydon Donald, Nicole Ercoli, Jeremiah Hubbard, Zoe Palmer, all of Larkin High School; Patrick Stephen of Bartlett High School.
The event also featured U-46 alums Christopher and Ashley Sumner who served as the masters of ceremony for the evening and a beautiful performance by Dr. Rise Jones who sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Velma Sept of the African American Advisory Council also welcomed families to the celebration.
