Public Urged to Submit Questions for Candidate Forum
Jan. 17, 2019
ELGIN - The Citizens’ Advisory Council will host a candidate forum on March 14 at which members of the public can learn more about the men and women running for the Board of Education in the April 2 Consolidated Election. To prepare for this event the CAC is asking members of the public to submit questions they would like the forum’s moderator to ask the candidates.
“We’re proud to once again host this informative event about one of the most important local elections in any community,” said CAC Chairperson Lisa Hopp. “The forum will be a great opportunity for all U-46 families and community members to learn more about the Board of Education candidates and their positions on issues that impact our schools and students.”
Potential questions can be submitted until Feb. 15 to U46CACForum@gmail.com. The CAC Candidate Forum Ad-hoc Committee, which is planning the forum, will review submissions and provide potential questions for the forum moderator. In order to maintain the integrity of the process, the list of potential questions will not be made public or available to the candidates themselves until they are asked during the forum. The moderator will be Madhu Krishnamurthy, a senior staff writer and education writer for the Daily Herald.
The Board of Education (BOE) is responsible for determining the policies which guide the operation of School District U-46. Elected members serve four-year terms and are not paid for their services. It is a non-partisan position.
The U-46 BOE has seven members, along with a non-voting student advisor. Four seats are up for election on April 2; a total of eight candidates filed in December to run for a seat on the BOE. They are incumbents John T. Devereux of Bartlett; Susan E. Kerr of Bartlett, and Jeanette Ward of West Chicago; as well as Daniel Hancock of Hanover Park; Eva J. Porter of Hanover Park; Tina Rio of Bartlett; Ina Silva-Sobolewski of Hanover Park and Kathleen (Kate) Thommes of Elgin.
In the spring election, voters in U-46 will choose up to four candidates on their ballots for the BOE. The top four vote-getters will be elected.
The CAC’s School Board Candidate Forum will start at 7 p.m Thursday, March 14 in the auditorium of the Dream Academy, which is adjacent to the Educational Services Center, 355 E. Chicago St., Elgin. Enter through the ESC main doors to enter the auditorium on the second floor.
The event is open to the community. Those attending are asked to arrive a few minutes early to find seating and get settled before the forum gets underway. A video request for questions and reminder of the forum can be found in English and in Spanish.
