Board of Education Honors Teachers as Part of Teacher Appreciation Week, Salute Nurses and Welcome Student Advisor
May 2, 2022
The School District U-46 Board of Education will honor both teachers and school nurses during Monday night’s Board meeting, noting their dedication and determination to keep our schools and community moving forward during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The last two years have been challenging for all those who work in public education,” said U-46 Superintendent Dr. Tony Sanders. “Our teachers and school nurses have been on the front lines, serving our families with respect and care and modeling for our students the qualities of strength and resilience.”
U-46 employs nearly 2,300 teachers who work across 57 school sites. May 2-6 is recognized nationwide as Teacher Appreciation Week, a celebration of educators sponsored by the National Education Association. The Board will issue a proclamation Monday night as part of its recognition efforts.
Tied to Teacher Appreciation Week, the U-46 Educational Foundation is inviting students, alumni, and parents to honor a teacher by making a donation to the Foundation. Donors can customize a card with a personalized message that will be mailed to their honoree. In addition, donors can share their thoughts on what makes their teacher special, and the Foundation will share those stories online.
Funds raised through the campaign will go back to teachers via the Foundation’s teacher and staff grant program. Details can be found at u-46.org/foundation.
The Board of Education will also designate May 11 as School Nurse Day, which is celebrated on the Wednesday within National Nurse Week. U-46 employs 96 nurses — 74 Registered Nurses and 22 Certified School Nurses, who are specially credentialed RNs.
Finally, the U-46 Board of Education on Monday will welcome the new student advisor to the Board for the 2022-23 school year. Angelica Harris, a junior at South Elgin High School, will take the oath of office. Madeline Conter, a junior at Elgin High School, will serve as the alternate.
They were chosen by Dr. Sanders’ student advisory council and approved 6-0 by the Board on April 25.
The Board will also recognize the outgoing Student Advisor Jessica Pearce, who will graduate in May from Bartlett High School, and thank her for her service.
In addition to attending regular BOE meetings and functions, the student advisor organizes the annual Student Summit that allows high school students to engage in constructive discussions about topics that matter to young people; results are shared with the BOE. Previous summits have led to changes in the District’s dress code and influenced Equity initiatives.
The Board of Education will recognize teachers and school nurses with “Accent on Achievement” certificates during its meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, May 2, in room 140 of the Educational Services Center. The U-46 Board of Education meeting will also be streamed live on the District’s YouTube channel and be available for the public to participate via a Zoom webinar at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88119658948.
