U-46 Students Honored for Achievements at Illinois Special Olympics
Aug. 22, 2022
The School District U-46 Board of Education Monday will recognize three students for their achievements this summer in the Illinois Special Olympics.
The U-46 Blue Stars sent 13 students to the Summer Games of the Illinois Special Olympics, held in June at sites around Bloomington-Normal, and three returned with gold medals. The students qualified for the state competition by earning a first place in the regional competition of their sport.
Evelyn Diem, who started 10th grade this 2022-23 school year at Elgin High School, won 1st place in the standing long jump. Charles Hall, now an 8th grader at Kenyon Woods Middle School, placed first in the 50-meter run. Kaylie Behrens also placed first in the 50-meter run; she finished 12th grade last school year at Bartlett High School and started this month in the Secondary Work Experience Program (SWEP), part of the District’s Specialized Student Services Department.
“Our U-46 Blue Stars are some of the hardest-working athletes I have ever met,” said Brooke McGrath, an Instructional Special Education Teacher Leader in U-46 who also serves as the Blue Stars’ coach and coordinator. “I couldn't be more proud of our athletes this track and field season. They have overcome a few hurdles these past several years, but they sure did persevere and give it their all!”
The Board of Education will recognize the students with “Accent on Achievement” certificates at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, in room 140 of the Educational Services Center, 355 E. Chicago St., Elgin. The U-46 Board of Education meeting will also be streamed live on the District’s YouTube channel and be available for the public to participate via a Zoom webinar at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87559361287 as well.
