Information about SHIELD Testing, COVID Protocols over Winter Break
Dec. 20, 2021
With our school buildings closed and students enjoying some down time over Winter Break, we wanted to provide you with information about COVID-19 testing and protocols during the next couple of weeks.
SHIELD Results During Winter Break
For those students who undergo regular SHIELD testing at their school building, testing services will not be available during the Winter Break (Dec. 20 through Jan. 3.) If a student has tested before the break, and the results return as positive after the break begins, notification will be sent to all email addresses attached to the student’s parent/guardian in Infinite Campus.
Parents are also encouraged to check the results for their child via the SHIELD Illinois Testing Portal. Instructions on creating an account on the portal, as well as the agency code required, can be found here. While the Health Services team works hard to make sure parents receive prompt notification of positive results, it is ultimately the responsibility of the parent/guardian to check the results for their child.
If your student is not a part of this and you would like to sign them up for SHIELD testing at their school building, please fill out this form and submit it to your school nurse after the break or email the PDF to healthservices@u-46.org. More information about SHIELD testing can be found here.
Contact Tracing During Break
There will be a limited number of nursing staff available over Winter Break to make sure contact tracing continues. If your family is scheduled to receive a follow-up call from your building nurse, or receive clearance for your child to return to school, you might get contacted by a different contact tracer.
Traveling During Winter Break
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has made recommendations for traveling during winter break as it relates to COVID-19. That guidance can be found here. While U-46 hopes that all travelers follow the guidance provided by the CDC, we cannot enforce or require any exclusion or quarantine due to travel. We do, however, ask that you continue to monitor your children and immediately report any COVID-19 symptoms and/or exposure to the school building nurse. Emailing the school nurse is the best option over Winter Break.
COVID Safety Measures
While the end of the year is around the corner, unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic continues. These guidelines from the CDC aim to ensure safety among family and friends during the holidays:
- Illinois continues to mandate the wearing of masks while inside public places, regardless of vaccination status. Consider wearing a well-fitting mask also at private gatherings if around people from outside your immediate social circle or with people who have a weakened immune system or have pre-existing conditions that puts them at higher risk for severe disease.
- Consider using a COVID self-test before joining indoor gatherings with others who are not a part of your household.
- Avoid crowds and poorly ventilated indoor spaces, and socially distance yourself from those who don’t live with you.
- If you are sick or experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms, stay home. Do not host or attend any gatherings - even if you are vaccinated.
- If you are not fully vaccinated, please consider doing so as soon as possible. Children ages 5 and up are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Find your nearest vaccine location at www.vaccines.gov.
The U-46 Health Services team wishes you a very happy - and healthy - holiday season.
