Board of Education Honors Glenbrook's Future Problem Solvers Team
May 18, 2020
The School District U-46 Board of Education Monday will recognize the 5th grade Future Problem Solvers team from Glenbrook Elementary School in Streamwood for placing first in state.
Future Problem Solvers is an international program that aims to develop students’ problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to support a more positive future. There are three age divisions.
The Glenbrook students who won Illinois’ junior division are 5th graders Mannat Ashta, Risha Lakkadi, Veer Gupta, and Yuvan Ganne, all part of the District’s IGNITE gifted education program. Their coach is Ellen Smith, a 4th grade IGNITE teacher at Glenbrook who also mentors students in the “middles” division. She has been coaching Future Problem Solvers teams for six years.
“I have really seen the program grow and succeed,” said Smith. “I am very proud of all the students who join, as it does require a lot of extra work, above and beyond the work they do for their classes.”
One of the middles teams, composed of four 9th graders from the Bartlett High School STEM Magnet Academy, will also move on to the virtual international competition, taking place in June. Those students are Mann Sheth, Anant Sheth, Arjun Sivasankaran, and Danyal Sulemanjee.
The Board of Education will virtually recognize the Glenbrook Future Problem Solvers team with Accent on Achievement certificates during its meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, May 18. Due to the Stay-in-Place, the Board will be participating electronically using a Zoom Webinar which the public may join live at https://zoom.us/j/94438077991. Members of the public will be able to issue public comment through the Zoom application during the public comment portion of the meeting, which will be available on the District's YouTube Channel within 24 hours of the meeting.
