Open, Closed, and Positive Cases of Covid-19 Since March 2020

Covid-19 Reporting Definitions

  • This report is cumulative for all U-46 staff and student reports of COVID-19 possible exposure since March 2020. The categories are defined as follows:

    • Open case - represents any reported suspected or confirmed case involving a U-46 staff member or student. All suspected cases are to be shared with a U-46 administrator. A District or school administrator documents the reported case with the U-46 Health Services Department. The District reports any self-reported positive cases to the local county health department. A case remains ‘open’ while it is being investigated, during the period of self-quarantine, or until the individual is released to return to school by the county health department or by the U-46 Human Resources Department. As suspected cases are included in this category, it is expected there will be a higher number of open cases than confirmed cases. Open cases could remain open for 14 days while staff or student monitor symptoms.
    • Closed case - represents the cumulative number of cases since mid-March 2020 that was reported to U-46, was investigated, and closed. A case closes after a U-46 Health Services and Human Resources or a county health department determines that an individual with a suspected exposure or a confirmed positive case has been cleared to resume normal activities.
    • Positive case - represents the cumulative number of confirmed cases from March 2020. This data reflects either a self-reported confirmed case or a confirmed case as reported by a county health department. All confirmed positive cases involving a U-46 staff member or student are reported to the proper local county health department and monitored by U-46 Health Services.

Informing the school community of a positive case - If the individual with the confirmed positive case was not in the building (i.e. a student who has remained at home) we would not communicate but would account for that confirmed case through this reporting system. If the confirmed case individual was at a U-46 facility while symptomatic or confirmed, a message will be sent to only staff, if no students were present at the time. If students were present while the individual was in the building, then both staff and families will be notified. The U-46 Health Services,  school administrators, and/or county health officials will reach out to specific individuals who were identified as having been in close contact with the confirmed case. Close contact is defined as anyone (with or without a face covering) who was within six feet of an individual with a confirmed case of COVID-19, for at least 15 minutes throughout the course of a day. Please see the COVID-19 notification flowcharts on the left-hand side of this page that outlines the District’s response and notification process.

    * Close contact is anyone (with or without a face covering) who was within 6 feet of an individual with a confirmed case of COVID-19, for at least 15 minutes throughout the course of a day.

Please note that confidentiality is required and U-46 does not release any information that would identify a person and their health status. When U-46 sends a communication about a confirmed case it is noted as an ‘individual’ and we do not differentiate if that individual is a staff member or student.
