  • Parents Urged to Participate in Illinois 5Essentials Survey

The Illinois 5Essentials Survey opened to parents on Tuesday, Oct. 23. The survey provides a unique opportunity for parents to have a voice in improving their child’s education, and it coincides with many parent-teacher conferences across U-46. The survey’s results, which include both a teacher and student portion that opens Nov. 15, help District and school administrators and staff to identify a school’s strengths and areas that need improvement. The results can help school leaders better target resources and interventions for their buildings.

The survey is mobile friendly, available in English and Spanish, and only takes about 15 minutes to complete. Parents can identify themselves by leaving an email address or they can remain anonymous as they complete the survey.

To take the survey, parents are instructed to visit survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the “parent survey” tab to answer important questions about their child’s school. Parents can complete a survey for each child. For example, if a parent has two students in a U-46 elementary school and one in a U-46 middle school, the parent can complete two surveys for the elementary school and one for the middle school.

At least 20 percent of a school’s parent population must submit a completed survey in order for the state to generate survey results. Principals across U-46 have shared their parent results in blogs, newsletters, and at PTA meetings. Those results can inspire a school to try new approaches or efforts to improve leadership, instruction, staff collaboration, or school climate and culture. At Sycamore Trails Elementary in Bartlett, for instance, the 5Essentials parental feedback led to the creation of a Safety Pledge to help keep students safe during arrival and dismissal, more after-school offerings, and a 6th grade parent panel to support students transitioning to middle school.

U-46 parents with any questions on 5Essentials are encouraged to please use Let’s Talk.
