Distance Learning - May 2020 Update

  • In early May, School District U-46 updated our distance learning elementary and secondary student expectations and communicated the changes to our families as follows:

    • Clarified attendance guidelines for all, and a new daily attendance check-in deadline of 2:30 p.m. for secondary students.
    • Increased flexibility, reducing expected instructional minutes and daily activities by subject and by grade level to more closely align to Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) guidelines.
    • Set a Districtwide goal to move toward using just one online learning management system (LMS), Canvas, by fall 2020, to provide a more uniform and streamlined user experience for teachers and students.

We made these updates, in collaboration with our entire team, based on important feedback we have received over the past six weeks from our faculty and families, as well as the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) guidelines.

As a reminder, the goals of distance learning remain the same: to encourage student engagement, move forward within the existing curriculum, assess students’ academic needs, work towards mastery of content, and provide a variety of learning experiences and opportunities.

U-46 teachers are immersed in ongoing professional development as we explore and fine tune new distance learning instructional strategies. Each day we are learning new and better ways to support U-46 students via online platforms.

We have learned that central to this new Distance learning experience is frequent outreach and support for students’ academic and social and emotional needs. In addition to the above changes, we are working toward implementing more interactive two-way teaching and learning experiences in our Distance Learning Program. We thank our students, families and faculty for their feedback, collaboration, and patience as we work to continually improve our program.
