School District U-46 Board of Education Earns Governance Recognition Honor
Elgin, IL
November 6, 2024 - The School District U-46 Board of Education has been recognized for their exceptional governance practices by the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB). U-46’s Board was one of less than 50 Illinois school districts to earn the School Board Governance Recognition honor for their effective governance behaviors and commitment to obtaining the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively lead the district.
IASB’s School Board Governance Recognition program acknowledges local boards of education that practice good governance behaviors as outlined by IASB's Foundational Principles of Effective Governance. The focus of Governance Recognition is on full board development and participation. Boards that meet the necessary requirements are recognized for the two-year honorary distinction.
“The members of our Board of Education have shown their commitment to the District, the students, and the entire community by continually improving their leadership skills and knowledge,” said U-46 Superintendent Dr. Suzanne Johnson. “Their work does not stop at Board meetings. They study the issues, advocate on behalf of U-46, and learn the intricacies of school finance. In addition, the important, long-range work around Unite U-46 has demonstrated how the board engages with the community on issues of importance.”
The U-46 Board of Education members - President Melissa Owens, Vice President Kate Thommes, Secretary Pro-Tem Chanda Schwartz, Sue Kerr, Samreen Khan, Dawn Martin, and Veronica Noland - were presented with an Accent on Achievement at the Nov. 4 BOE meeting ahead of “School Board Members Day” on Nov. 15.
The School Board Governance Recognition program aims to showcase how good governance creates a positive impact for students, staff, and the entire district community.
The Illinois Association of School Boards is a voluntary organization of local boards of education dedicated to strengthening the public schools through local citizen control.
