Standards Based Learning and Assessment Guidelines
Beginning with the 2024-25 school year, reported grades will be a combination of a student's demonstration of mastery through summative, formative, and intentional practice work.
Final grades posted to a report card will be calculated with the following weights:
- 70% - Summative Assessment Scores: Mid / End of the unit measure of student proficiency. Students have 1 reassessment attempt for each summative assessment in a unit and the reassessment attempt must be completed before the end of the next unit. There may be relearning requirements that must be completed before the reassessment attempt.
- 20% - Formative Assessment Scores: Work that prepares students either in content or in form for the summative assessment. This work must include feedback for students on their results. Formative assessment can be reassessed within the unit but not after the unit summative. Late work will be accepted up until the end of the unit with no penalty.
- 10% - Intentional Practice Scores: Classwork that supports students in learning the content. Teacher feedback on student progress is required for this work. Intentional practice work is not reassessed and late work is accepted up until the end of the unit with no penalty. At the end of the unit (when the end of unit summative is submitted), any unsubmitted work will receive a score of zero.
Assignment categories in Infinite Campus and Canvas will be updated to match these three areas.
During the course of a unit, there will be many different learning opportunities. Not all learning opportunities will be recorded in the gradebook. Of the work recorded in the gradebook, there will likely be more practice assignments than formative assessments. Summative assignments will be limited to a few culminating assessments or projects.
Given the expanded categories, grades will be entered more frequently. While assignments and grades may be present in Canvas, students and families should use Infinite Campus to view assignment scores and in-progress grades.

Levels of Performance/Mastery
In alignment with our SBLA guiding principles, all work (practice, formative, summative) that impacts the final grade must have the ability to earn a 4. For intentional practice work, this will likely mean providing feedback on mastery against the learning target and/or success criteria for the day. For formative work, feedback might communicate progress on one standard, a component of a standard, a learning target, or a combination of these. For summative work, this would be feedback on the mastery of the content of the entire unit. Students should be aware of what is required to demonstrate mastery at each level prior to engaging in any work that will impact their final grade.
