School District U-46 to Demonstrate Appreciation for Veterans with Special Events

Students and staff in School District U-46 will support and honor our local veterans and troops with special ceremonies, concerts, displays, and collections during the month of November. In addition, local veterans will visit classrooms to speak to students about their service and their lives in a program being held in partnership with the Gail Borden Public Library.

Tish Calhamer, the community engagement manager at the Gail Borden Public Library, is working with about 20 volunteer veterans as part of the special program, called Veterans Voices. Veterans who may want to participate in future events are encouraged to visit gailborden.info/veterans to learn more and submit a volunteer application.

In addition to the Veterans Voices visits, additional Veterans Day events in U-46 schools are as follows:

Students create pictures, letters and cards for military troops stationed overseas.

Prairieview Elementary School - 285 Mayflower Lane, Bartlett

Throughout the week, the school librarian will be reading to classes the book "America's White Table" and the students will be "setting the table" according to the book with the items that represent special symbols of our veterans. 

A 1st grade classroom will write thank you notes to veterans, learn about the five branches of the military, and talk about the vocabulary word “appreciate” in relation to veterans. 5th grade classrooms will be making cards for veterans and conducting a reading and worksheet activity centered on Veterans Day.  

Tefft Middle School - 1100 Shirley Ave., Streamwood

South Elgin High School - 760 E. Main St., South Elgin 

Activities will vary through Friday, Nov. 11

A breakfast for staff veterans and visiting veterans will be held. Students will write postcards thanking veterans. Students at the Beacon Magnet Academy will share a veteran-themed broadcast with veteran interviews, history of Veterans Day, issues for veterans in the community, and patriotic music performed by the SEHS band. The SEHS student council and Storm Nation are collecting donations of comfort items to be delivered to Veterans Affairs hospitals.

Current EHS staff members who are veterans will participate in a forum with students to take questions and discuss their experiences in the military
