Mensaje en español se encuentra abajo. Co-principal to join Highland Elementary School
starting with 2023-24 school yearDear Highland Elementary School Parents/Guardians,
We are pleased to announce that Ms. Anissa Upshaw-Lanotte will join Highland Elementary School as the Co-Principal starting next school year, 2023-24.
As you may be aware, Mr. Steve Johnson will retire at the conclusion of the next school year. He will continue as the school’s principal for the 2023-24 school year. By having Ms. Upshaw-Lanotte join in this role at Highland during the 2023-2024 school year, she will be able to provide stability and continuity with the plan of her transition into the school’s principal role effective with the 2024-25 school year.
A little background on Ms. Anissa Upshaw-Lanotte - since 2019, she has served as the Assistant Principal of Ridge Circle Elementary School in Streamwood. There, she has helped improve staff communication via regular messaging, conducted teacher evaluations, led the work to create consistency in student discipline situations through a restorative lens, and served as a bridge between leadership committees to maintain the focus on overall core student instruction. She has also created classroom libraries to build cultural awareness and improved student sense of belonging through special events like a “Student Open Mic” for Black History Month.
Prior to joining U-46, Ms. Upshaw-Lanotte worked for six years in School District 65, which serves pre-K through 8th grade students in Evanston and parts of Skokie. There, she served as a special education teacher for self-contained classrooms and as a case manager for students with a wide range of learning disabilities. She also worked as a resource teacher and general education classroom teacher in the district. In all roles, she excelled at fostering learning environments and school programs that connect to both the academic as well as social-emotional well being of all students.
Before changing careers to become an educator, Ms. Upshaw-Lanotte owned a marketing sales agency in Chicago, working with licensed vendors of sports apparel and major retailers.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Management from Wayne State University and an MBA from the University of Phoenix. From National-Louis University, she earned both a Master of Arts in Elementary Education and a Master’s in Educational Leadership.
Please join me in congratulating Ms. Upshaw-Lanotte on her new role at Highland Elementary School.
Sincerely,
Ms. Sarah Rabe
Executive Director of Elementary Schools
