Black History Month began as Negro History Week, which was created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson. It became a month-long celebration in 1976. It began as a way of remembering important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. Dr. Woodson selected the week in February that included the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, two key figures in the history of Black Americans. It is celebrated in February in the United States and Canada, while in Ireland, and the United Kingdom, it is observed in October.
