Happy 24-25 School Year! Welcome Highland Families!!

Arrival & Dismissal Safety

  • Dear Highland Families,

The safety of our students during arrival and dismissal is our top priority.

To ensure that students at Highland thrive, it’s crucial that we work together.

Even in stressful situations where emotions are high, it is essential to remember that students are observing our behaviors while on school property. As parents, it's important to model positive behavior for our students, even in such instances.

    Here are a few reminders:

    • Consider staying respectful and calm

    • Communicate politely, effectively, and clearly

    • Aim to collaborate and find common ground

    • If needed, offer apologies and show empathy

Just as we are actively teaching our students at Highland, it's essential to handle conflicts with self-awareness and to avoid unkind or inappropriate words and actions. It is everyone's responsibility to maintain mutual respect and ensure the safety of each other as well as our students.

We must seek to handle parent-to-parent conflicts that arise in a civil manner. If we are not successful, please be advised that Administration will follow the District's protocol, which may involve contacting the Elgin Police Department for assistance.

Thank you for prioritizing the safety and well-being of our students and each other while on Highland’s campus.

    Sincerely,

    Principal Lanotte

If your child is truly sick, they need to stay home.

For a fever, a student must be fever free with no help of medication for 24 hours prior to returning to school. This rule also applies if a student is vomiting or has diarrhea. A student must be free of these symptoms without help of medication for 24 hours to be able to return to school.

Every day in school counts and helps build the foundation for your child's academic success.

Daily attendance supports academic success. The habit of regular and punctual attendance is a quality that will follow a student throughout life. We expect all U-46 students to arrive on time and attend school daily.

The Board of Education has established the 2023-24 school year calendar and consists of 176 instructional days for students, with five emergency days built into the calendar. A full day of attendance for students must be a minimum of four clock hours of instruction for students in full-day kindergarten or 1st grade and five clock hours of instruction for students in 2nd through 12th grade.

On a regular school day, students in full-day kindergarten or 1st grade who received less than 240 minutes of instruction but at least 120 minutes, can be claimed for a half day of attendance. Students in 2nd through 12th grade who receive less than 300 minutes of instruction but at least 150 minutes of instruction can be claimed for a half-day of attendance.
