A group of kids and adults cut a ribbon outside a school

Illinois Park Elementary School students welcomed families and community leaders on a beautiful fall afternoon as School District U-46 celebrated the official ribbon-cutting of the school's new multipurpose space and playgrounds.

As part of the Unite U-46 initiative, Illinois Park has transitioned into a neighborhood elementary school serving students from preschool through fifth grade. The transformation includes reconfigured classrooms designed for elementary learners, two new inclusive playgrounds where students of all abilities can play and build friendships, and a 6,500-square-foot multipurpose space that will bring students together for meals and school celebrations.

"We were very excited for everyone to see the new lunchroom and how big and cool it is. It is my favorite part of our new school!" shared fifth-grade student Marylena Khanania, who spoke during the ceremony.
