    Four-year colleges generally recommend that students take the following college preparatory courses in high school:

    • 4 years of English
    • 3 years of math (including Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II)
    • 3 years of science (with laboratory experience)
    • 2-3 years of the same foreign language
    • 3 years of social studies
    • 1 year of fine or performing arts
       

    Colleges use some, if not all, of the information listed below when determining whether or not to accept an applicant.

    • grade point average (GPA)
    • strength of subjects
    • ACT/SAT scores
    • Class rank
    • Recommendations
    • Special talents
    • Personal qualities
    • Activities/awards
    • Essays
    • Interviews
