-
We are pleased to announce that Ms. Avelira Rodríguez González has been selected as the new Principal of Elgin High School, bringing with her 25 years in education, including more than 18 years of administration experience in a variety of diverse settings. Throughout her career in teaching and leadership roles, she has held an expectation of success for every learner in her building, and she is an advocate for establishing and supporting strong parental and community involvement in schools.
Ms. Rodríguez González comes to U-46 after serving for two years as the principal at Waukegan High School’s Brookside Campus. There she has worked to create a school climate characterized by mutual respect, professionalism, and a high level of staff and student morale. Under her leadership, the school experienced an increase in the number of freshman and sophomore students on track for graduation, an increase in daily student attendance, and improvement in the 5Essentials Survey in the areas of effective leadership, ambitious instruction, collaborative teachers, and involved families.
Prior to working in Waukegan, Ms. Rodríguez González was the assistant principal of the Dr. Bessie Rhodes School of Global Studies in Evanston Community Consolidated School District 65. Among other responsibilities, she assisted with allocating resources to best support school improvement and with the hiring, support, and retention of effective staff. Other leadership roles include serving as the assistant principal for student services at the Technology Center of DuPage, the dean of students at Glenbard East High School District 87, and a human services coordinator for Proviso Township High School District 209.
Ms. Rodríguez González began her career in education as an ELL teacher at an elementary school in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. She worked in Osceola County Public Schools in Florida for nine years in roles including as a middle school teacher, positive behavior support coordinator, learning resource specialist, and dean of students.
She earned her bachelor’s degree in ELL K-12 education from the Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico, Arecibo Campus. Ms. Rodríguez González holds two master’s degrees from the University of Phoenix - one in adult and distance learning and another in administration and supervision. She earned a master’s degree in education administration from Concordia University-Chicago, as well as an Education Specialist Degree from Concordia with a superintendent endorsement.
Please join me in congratulating Ms. Rodríguez González on her new role at Elgin High School.
