What are some of your daily work responsibilities?
Generally my daily responsibilities include assessing, planning, teaching, and corresponding with students, families, and staff - and having fun!
How long have you worked for U-46?
Approximately two years.
What is it like to work for the District where you attended school and from which you graduated and what does it mean to you?
It means a lot to me that I have the opportunity to give back to the community that has given and continues to give me so much. I love it here!
Which U-46 schools did you attend?
Elgin High School.
What year did you graduate from high school?
1992.
Were you a part of an academy or any specialized
program?
I believe I predate the academies, (shh!)
What was your favorite subject and why?
I loved both History and English classes. Both subjects I found innately interesting and the teachers brought the coursework to life. Plus, of course, I loved PE! PE teachers had all kinds of fun games and sports to keep us active and engaged.
Who was your favorite teacher and why?
I loved History with Mr. Otunga and English with Mrs. Roll. They both cared about students and knew how to make the curriculum interesting, rigorous, relevant, and engaging. They also held us to high standards. They were awesome teachers!
Please share a favorite memory from your time as a student in U-46.
I remember my Civics teacher taking me and one other student on a field trip to visit the Kane County Courthouse and County Jail. She picked us up at our homes and gave us personal tours of everything. It was very interesting and quite inline with my interest in law!
Please share a favorite memory of working in U-46?
I have so many positive memories of working in U-46, that it is hard to pick just one! The students really make the difference. I have worked with so many interesting children who regularly make me smile and laugh every single day. It is amazing that I get to watch them learn and grow and they teach me so much. The students are the best thing about my profession, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Briefly describe your post-secondary college and/or career experience.
I graduated from Northern Illinois University (NIU) with a B.S. & B.A. in Elementary Education. Later I graduated from NIU again, but with an M.S. in Special Education with licensure in Learning & Behavior Disorders and in Learning English as an Additional Language. Earning the degrees was challenging, but well worth it.
What important life or academic lesson did you learn in U-46?
I learned a strong work ethic, to have vision & set goals, and that diversity is strength.
