The AVID elective is a class for students who want to prepare themselves for college and career opportunities. AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination”, is a class offered in grades 7-12 in U-46. Students choose this elective for the chance to learn study skills, visit colleges and local employers, develop organizational strategies and prepare for more challenging coursework. AVID is a great opportunity for students looking to develop leadership skills.

The mission of AVID is to “close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society."  Many students who take the AVID elective are the first in their family to attend college. AVID students are hard-working students looking to improve their grades and take more rigorous courses, such as Honors, Advanced Placement and Dual Credit.

School District U-46 is committed to providing our students with a comprehensive, high quality learning experience that challenges each student, provides them with the opportunity to apply this learning in their lives and affirms and upholds the district's values, purpose and vision.

U-46 currently offers AVID elective courses in grades 7 through 12. All middle and high schools have an AVID Site Coordinator and an active AVID Site Team. The district also has an AVID District Director that oversees the AVID College Readiness System. U-46 had its first AVID Senior graduating class during the 2012-2013 school year, which marked the end of the 4th year of AVID implementation.
