An interest in both medicine and helping people led Maria Nieto to her job as a medical assistant at Greater Elgin Family Care Center (GEFCC).
Medical assistants are responsible for a wide variety of duties at GEFCC, providing patient care and follow-up and assisting healthcare providers by taking a patient’s vitals before an examination. It’s a job that requires a good attention to detail and the ability to multi-task, Nieto says, and one that helps keep a medical practice running smoothly.
Nieto, a 2011 Elgin High School graduate, has been at GEFCC for two years, and it’s a great match.
“It’s not even like work, I love what I do,” she said.
Greater Elgin Family Care Center operates 10 facilities across the region and provides affordable medical, dental and behavioral health care to all, including those who cannot pay.
The centers have a wide variety of jobs available, from medical doctors to medical support like nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical assistant, to office and support staff.
Nieto’s job requires a degree from an accredited program. She earned hers after two years at the Lincoln College of Technology in Melrose Park. She is still in school, studying at the College of DuPage, and plans on becoming a registered nurse.
