• Early Childhood Continuum of Services

    Early Childhood Resource:  Special education resource teachers push into the blended, preschool classroom (general education) to provide services and accommodations to students who have identified educational needs and delays in pre-academics and/or functional academic/performance skills.  

     

    Early Childhood Resource ELL:  Special education resource teachers push into the bilingual blended, preschool classroom (general education) to provide services and accommodations to students who have identified educational needs and delays in pre-academics and/or functional academic/performance skills.

     

    Early Childhood Special Education Instructional:  A self contained, preschool program that serves students who have identified educational needs and delays in one or more of the following areas of development: cognitive/academic, adaptive/functional, speech/language, fine and/or gross motor, social/emotional, physical/orthopedic impairments, vision and/or hearing.  These delays impact the student’s ability to participate in a blended, preschool classroom with typically developing peers paired with an inability to access the general education curriculum without the support of a highly structured classroom with a low student to teacher ratio.

    Speech and Language: A special education service that provides students with identified educational needs and delays in one or more of the following areas of communication: articulation, speech intelligibility, voice, fluency or language (receptive, expressive and pragmatic).  This service is most often provided through push-in or pull-out services within the blended, preschool classroom (general education).

     

    Speech and Language ELL:  A special education service that provides students, whose primary language is Spanish, with identified educational needs and delays in one or more of the following areas of communication: articulation, speech intelligibility, voice, fluency or language (receptive, expressive and pragmatic).  This service is most often provided through push-in or pull-out services within the blended, preschool classroom (general education).

     

    Center-Based Speech and Language: A special education service that provides students with identified educational needs and delays with their articulation and/or speech intelligibility.  This service is offered on a walk-in basis and is most often provided to students who attend a preschool or daycare program outside of the school district and the only area of need is speech. 

     


    Elementary Continuum of Services

    Cross Categorical Resource (CCR):  An elementary school program that serves students, in general education, who require specialized instruction within reading, writing, math and executive functioning.  Students are assigned to a general education classroom and resource services are provided within the general education setting and/or in the resource setting for a small portion of the day. This programming is offered at all of our elementary schools.

     

    Cross Categorical Resource ELL:  An elementary school program that serves students, in general education, who are bilingual in English and/or Spanish, and who require specialized instruction within reading, writing, math and executive functioning.  Students are assigned to a general education classroom and resource services are provided within the general education setting and/or in the resource setting for a small portion of the day.     Emotional Development Instructional Program (EDIP):  A self contained program that serves students that have been identified as having an emotional disability and other students with similar needs.  This program provides social-emotional supports; including appropriate peer interaction, problem-based learning, and coping strategies, and building self-esteem and self-regulation. Students in this program typically have a behavior intervention plan (BIP). This programming is offered at various cluster sites across the District and is not located at every elementary school. 

     

    Exceptional Needs I Instructional (ENI):  A self contained program that serves students with significant moderate to severe cognitive impairments and/or other like needs as determined by appropriate testing and the IEP. This programming is offered at various cluster sites across the District and is not located at every elementary school. The students may typically display any/all of the following characteristics:

    • Limited communication due to both intellectual and physical factors

    • Possible medical complications

    • Limited ability to function independently across multiple environments

This programming is offered at various cluster sites across the District and is not located at every elementary school. The students may typically display any/all of the following characteristics:

    • Significantly limited communication due to both intellectual and physical factors

    • Possible medical complications

    • Significantly limited ability to function independently across multiple environments

     

    Instructional Learning Program (ILP):  A self contained program that serves students who have autism and/or other like needs in this highly structured, predictable and visual environment with embedded social, communication and sensory support. Students in this program are significantly impacted by their disability to a degree that their needs cannot be met in a general education or lesser restrictive environment. This programming is offered at various cluster sites across the District and is not located at every elementary school.

     

    Instructional Learning Program ELL (ILP ELL):  A self contained program that serves students who are bilingual in English and/or Spanish and who have autism and/or other like needs in this highly structured, predictable and visual environment with embedded social, communication and sensory support. Students in this program are significantly impacted by their disability to a degree that their needs cannot be met in a general education or lesser restrictive environment. This programming is offered at various cluster sites across the District and is not located at every elementary school.

     

    Intensive Instructional Program (IIP):  A program that serves students who demonstrate the need for more intensive instruction in reading, writing and math, based on data and insufficient progress with less intensive support. The IIP program consists of extensive and individualized  instruction with research based materials used to focus on literacy skills and mathematics. Students are in a special education setting for reading, writing and math only while participating in the general education setting for all other content subject areas and specials. 

     

    Modified Learning Program (MLP):  A self-contained program that serves students with mild to moderate cognitive impairments and other like needs in this structured, and visual environment with embedded social and communication support. This programming is offered at various cluster sites across the District and is not located at every elementary school. 

     

    Modified Learning Program ELL (MLP ELL):  A self contained program that serves students who are bilingual in English and/or Spanish and have mild to moderate cognitive impairments and other like needs in this structured, and visual environment with embedded social and communication support. This programming is offered at various cluster sites across the District and is not located at every elementary school.

     

    Speech and Language:  A program that serves students with delays in articulation, voice, fluency or language (expressive, receptive and pragmatic). This program can be provided within the general education classroom setting or within the speech and language therapy room. 

     

    Speech and Language ELL:  A program that serves students, who are bilingual in English and/or Spanish, and who show a delay in articulation, voice, fluency or language (expressive, receptive and pragmatic). This program can be provided within the general education classroom setting or within the speech and language therapy room. 

     

    Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Instructional:  A program that services students whose type and degree of hearing loss require total communication to access instruction. In addition to auditory, language, and self-advocacy acquisition, hearing loss impacts academic achievement. Students in this program require accommodations to meet linguistic and communication needs. This program is offered at a cluster site in the District and is not located at every elementary school. 

    Itinerant Services:  

    • Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) Resource:  A program that services students whose type and degree of hearing loss impacts auditory, language, and self-advocacy acquisition. Students in this program may require accommodations to meet language and communication needs. Students with access to this service regardless of general education or self-contained setting. 

    • Vision Impaired Resource (VI): A program that serves students with identified vision impairments across the continuum of special education placements. Students can access this service regardless of if they are in a general education setting or self contained setting. Students in the Vision Resource programs typically need daily vision instruction and use Braille or other tactile communication systems as their primary learning media. Instruction in the Expanded Core Curriculum for Students with Visual Impairments is a central part of the program. 

    • Orthopedic Impairment Itinerant (OI):  A program that serves students with a physical disability and requires modifications of general education or self contained classroom programming.  Students in this program are capable of being educated with their non-disabled peers through the use of modifications. This programming is offered at all of our schools. 

     


    Middle and High School Continuum of Services

    Co-Taught inside general education: A program in which a general education core class has two teachers, one general education teacher and one special education teacher. These two teachers co-plan, implement and assess the learning for both the general education students and special education students in the class. Co-taught programming is available at all of our middle and high schools. 

     

    Cross Categorical Instructional:  A program that serves middle or high school students that require specialized instruction for one or more core subject areas. The cross categorical instructional classes are self contained for that period of the day. All students in these classes have an IEP and receive specialized instruction in that core subject area. This programming is offered at all of our middle schools and high schools. 

     

    Cross Categorical Instructional ELL: A program that serves middle or high school students, whose primary language is Spanish and who require specialized instruction for one or more core subject areas.  The cross categorical instructional classes are self contained for that period of the day. All students in these classes have an IEP and receive specialized instruction in that core subject area. This programming is offered at all of our middle schools and high schools.

    Transition Program Continuum of Services

    Academics & Vocational Skills Transition (AVS):  AVS is a program for students who have completed 4 years of high school or are at least 18 years old. The program strives to enhance a student’s reading and math skills while working on independent functioning skills,  executive functional skills that are tied to a student’s career interest.  Students in this program attend classes for part of the day and have the opportunity to learn in the community a few times a week. This program is designed to be a 2 year program as students are expected to gain the skills needed to move on after that period of time. This program is not located at every high school, but is located at a cluster site in the District. 

     

    Career & Academics Program-Transition (CAP):  CAP is a program for students who have completed 4 years of high school or are at least 18 years old. The program is for students who want to enroll in a 2 year/4 year college or trade school though need more time to grow in academics and finalize a career path. Students in this program will receive support while attending 1 to 3 classes a semester at ECC through dual enrollment. Students need to be self motivated and independent in completing their work. This program is designed to be a 2 year program as students are expected to gain the skills needed to move on after that period of time. This program is not located at every high school, but is located at a cluster site in the District. 

     

    Center House:  This transition program is for students who have completed 4 years of high school or are are at least 18 years old.  Students typically come from self contained programs with a focus on functional academic and functional life skills.  The goal is to provide transition age students with a variety of experiences in a real life community based program in order to become active, contributing members of the community and maximize each person’s potential.  The Transition Program focuses on these domains: Work, Home, Community Recreation, and Leisure. The location of this program is 1219 Sherwood Ave. Elgin

     

    Transition From a Special Needs Specialized Program:  This transition program serves students with significant developmental disabilities such as intellectual disabilities, multiple disabilities, autism or other like needs. Students in this program have completed 4 years of high school or are at least 18 years old. This programming is offered at a cluster site at one of the comprehensive high schools and is not located at every high school. Students focus on the following skills:

    • Money management

    • Community Mobility

    • Independent Living Skills (cooking, cleaning, meal planning)

    • Vocational / Employment

    • Self-Advocacy

    • Community Training


    Transition SWEP:  This transition program is for students who have completed 4 years of high school or are at least 18 years old.  Students typically have mild to moderate intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities or other like needs. SWEP (Secondary Work Experience Program) follows a functional curriculum designed to support students as they develop self-determination skills and independent living skills.  The  goal is to help each student to participate as independently as possible in the community.  SWEP includes a training site called The Diner located at the Educational Services Center at 355 E. Chicago St, Elgin. Students at SWEP have the opportunity to receive training on-campus through various positions in The Diner.


    Alternative Programming for Students with IEPs Continuum of Services

    Private/Therapeutic Day:  A highly restrictive program without access to non-disabled peers that serves students whose educational needs, due to the severity of the disability, cannot be met in the public school environment. Often students in this setting demonstrate significant behavioral and/or medical needs. Students may not show sufficient progress in a lesser restrictive setting within the public school systems continuum of programming. Most of these schools are not located within U-46 boundaries and are located across the Chicagoland area. 

    Public Day - Central School:  A highly restrictive program without access to non-disabled peers that serves students with  severe behavior concerns or severe social emotional concerns. This program has a strong emphasis on positive behavior strategies, social emotional development and coping skills.  The social/emotional programs follow the District’s middle and high school curricula, while the program for students with developmental disabilities is vocationally based. This program is located at 355 E. Chicago St, Elgin.
