John Krafft Scholarship
To apply for the John Krafft Scholarship, inquire at the Elgin High School Athletics office. Deadline is May 10, 2024.
John Krafft, Elgin High School Coach, was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1975 and was one of the 10 initial inductees to the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame in 1980.
In 1928, Krafft became the assistant heavyweight football and basketball coach at Elgin High School. In 1940-41, he was named head basketball coach, a position he would hold for the next decade. During Coach Krafft’s tenure as head coach, Elgin High School posted a 178-48 record and claimed four Big Eight Conference titles outright and shared three others with two second-place finishes. EHS won six regional titles and made five trips to Champaign for the state tournament. EHS won at least one game in Champaign under Krafft during each visit except 1949. Elgin placed 4th in 1943, 3rd in 1950 and 2nd in 1944.
His 1948-1949 basketball team was involved in a serious accident returning home from a basketball tournament over the Christmas holidays in Wisconsin. Coach Krafft was injured and was unable to coach for a period of time; an assistant coach was killed and some players had injuries. At the time, the team was still undefeated.
In addition to his being a highly respected basketball coach, Krafft coached the “undefeated, untied and unscored upon” Elgin High lightweight football team in 1939. He coached this team for a number of years and had a very successful record.
Coach Krafft passed away in September 1984. The scholarship was established in his memory to support EHS athletes.

Alice Pragman Award/Scholarship
The Alice Pragman Award for English Excellence
The Alice Pragman Award for English Excellence was created in 2008 to honor a former Elgin High School English teacher who also served as head of the English department until her retirement in 1980. Miss Pragman maintained the highest of standards and inspired three generations of future English teachers. The award, created to honor Miss Pragman’s legacy, is awarded annually to an EHS senior who plans a career in English teaching, writing, or English-language studies.
The award is presented at the EHS Senior Recognition Assembly; Miss Pragman was present in 2009 to honor the first award recipient. Sadly, she passed away in October 2021 at the age of 97.
The Scholarship
Upon Miss Pragman's death, Alice's family chose to enhance the already prestigious award by creating a $1,000 scholarship for the winner of the Pragman award.
Miss Pragman's great-nephew told the U-46 Educational Foundation that his Great Aunt Alice was "always quietly proud of this recognition," and he felt the added scholarship piece would be "a good way for us to extend the honor given to her."
Elgin High School seniors who might qualify for the Alice Pragman Award for English Excellence should contact their Elgin High School English teacher.
Apply for the Alice Pragman Award/Scholarship at the Elgin High School English office.
