- Help! My Teen is Vaping!
-
Blame the vaping industry.
Vaping companies have aggressively marketed their products in a manner that is appealing to teens. They used enticing flavors, sleek designs, and messaging that appeals to young people, often downplaying the health risks and addictive potential of vaping. Many teenagers are drawn by the perception that vaping may be less harmful without realizing that less harmful does not equal harmless. By targeting teenagers and creating easy-to-hide products, vaping companies have directly contributed to the rise in teen vaping. Before engaging in a confrontation with your teen, parents can remind themselves that teenagers were targeted for a reason. This perspective can help frame discussions with empathy, focusing on support and education rather than blame.

How to Confront Your Teen
Choose the right time and place. A private, relaxed setting where both parent and teen can speak openly without distractions is going to help make the conversation productive.
Express concern, not anger. It is understandable to feel a wide range of emotions when you find out that your teen is vaping. Remember why you feel these emotions- you are concerned.
Use "I" statements. Saying things like "I feel worried about your health" instead of "you're in trouble" can help prevent defensiveness and be more impactful to your teen.
Stay curious. Instead of accusations, ask questions. This can help you understand your teen and decide what they need.
