• Special Olympics is the largest sport organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics serves more than three million athletes in more than 175 countries. District U-46 is the proud home of our own Special Olympics team, the “U-46 Bluestars."

    Basketball

Bluestars has been lucky enough to host three basketball teams: two high school teams and one junior team. In 2012, one of our High School teams took the State Championship! Basketball runs from November until mid-January. It extends to March if a team wins Gold at Regional’s. Practices are held on Thursdays from 4:30-5:30pm at Gifford Street High School Gym at 355 E. Chicago St., in Elgin.

Games schedules are pending and Regional’s take place in the middle of January at a location to be determined. Athletes can be ages 8-21.

    Track and Field

In Track and Field, athletes participate individually in running and throwing events. Practices are Thursdays from February to April at Gifford Street High School Gym, 355 E. Chicago St., Elgin. Practices are from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Spring Games take place in Aurora at the end of April. Athletes who win Gold at Spring Games are eligible for State Games held in mid-June.

    Bowling

Bluestars Bowling is for athletes in middle school and older. (Sorry, we do not offer bowling for elementary-aged athletes). Practices are on Wednesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. in April and May. Bowlway Lanes has been kind enough to host the Bluestar Bowling Team. Regional’s take place at the beginning of June. There is a small fee for lane cost.

All athletes need a valid medical form completed and signed by a physician. Forms are available for download in English and Spanish. Special Olympics requires the original doctor-signed form (no copies or faxes are allowed).

If your son/daughter is interested in any of the Special Olympics teams, please review the information (English / Spanish), and complete registration by September 20th, 2019. A registration form can be downloaded (English / Spanish) and sent to Huff Elementary School by your child’s teacher.
