Aerospace EngineeringWhat is the most important thing you learned in high school?
I believe the most important thing that I learned throughout the last four years is to never give up on your goals just because of the time it will take to accomplish them. The art of patience is key. We live in the age of instant gratification where we expect everything to come to us automatically, and I learned to realize that each day matters--continue to take small steps toward your goal every day, and it won't be long before you can look back to see how far you've come. What is your favorite high school memory?
I have many incredible memories over the past four years; however, one moment that stands out was when the varsity dance team qualified for day two at the state championship this year, as our team hadn't achieved that feat in four years! The journey to reach that day was marked by countless hours of practice, unwavering determination, and an unbreakable team spirit. As we competed against some of the best schools in the state, each dance felt like a battle of nerves and skill. When we learned that we had secured a spot in the day two finale, the feeling of accomplishment was overwhelming--knowing I had one last dance with my favorite team brought such a sense of accomplishment. However, this memory was not simply about the win; it proved that hard work and perseverance always pays off and that every obstacle in life is an opportunity for growth. I couldn’t be happier that I got to share this memorable experience with some of my best friends, all while creating countless memories with a team that I will never forget. What was your favorite class or learning experience?
During your junior year in the STEM Academy at BHS, everyone has the opportunity to partner with peers and create a product of your choosing. Throughout the year, you are immersed in the engineering design process. My group created a miniature Ultra Violet-C sanitary flashlight that was portable, compact, and equipped with a protective casing, making it safe for personal use. The design and build process required CAD modeling, 3-D printing, soldering, wiring, and other technical skills. What I enjoyed about this project was that it forced our group to troubleshoot when we encountered problems. When designing and creating, there are always unforeseeable issues, and this skill is particularly applicable in the fields of engineering and applied science and technology.Share your best advice for incoming freshmen:
Throughout the next four years, you may be challenged with classes that are overwhelming and increase your stress level, and it is during these moments that a positive outlet is beneficial. High school holds a wealth of opportunities for students--from new clubs and organizations, to sports teams and various activities. Additionally, athletics and extracurricular activities are some of the best ways to meet new friends who share like-minded interests. Just remember, while achieving your academic goals are necessary and beneficial for your future, finding your passion will bring you joy while offering a well-deserved break. What or who do you acknowledge for your academic success, and ranking in the top 2 percent of your senior class?
During high school, my desire to perform well academically and pursue a higher education stemmed from watching my parents and brother consistently work hard, set goals, and, as a result, experience high achievement. The unwavering support from my family on a daily basis, whether it was a listening ear, a shoulder to lean on, or words of encouragement, enabled me to build the confidence and resilience needed to persevere and tackle my personal goals successfully. In addition to my family, my teachers–since grade school–have ignited a lifelong love for learning in me, setting the stage for future academic success. From conquering grammar quizzes, to creating fun history projects, to tackling challenging math problems, I was blessed with mentors who supported me with positive classroom environments, offering encouragement and guidance, all while setting high expectations which helped contribute to my achievements. Furthermore, I am thankful to each and every one of my friends--you brought positive energy to my world, from all of the laughter we shared to get through the days, to your caring words of advice, I am forever grateful for you all. I would not have made it this far without all of my supporters along the way; thank you. What life lessons or observations have you gained about yourself, and the world, during the 2023-24 school year?
The 23/24 school year has undoubtedly been my toughest year of high school yet; however, it has been a year filled with my most valuable life lessons. I have come to appreciate the importance of living life in the moment. I've always carried a full schedule between school and dance, and it is easy to get caught up reflecting on a bad grade or being anxious about college or the future, and miss out on what matters most--the present. By staying in the moment I learned that nothing lasts forever, not even high school. As this year rapidly comes to a close, I am beyond thankful for my teachers, coaches, and friends who contributed to the creation of many wonderful and lasting memories. -

What is your favorite high school memory?
My favorite memory is competing at HOSA state for the past two years. Being able to apply my passion in different events was eye-opening and a fun experience. HOSA is a medical club we have at our school and I had the privilege of being on board for two years. At the state competition, we get to meet other schools and have a fun weekend hanging out with friends while competing!
What was your favorite class or learning experience?
My favorite class the Engineering Design and Development class that academy students take their junior year. Being able to create something new and work with a team to bring an idea to life was an extremely rewarding process. It taught me a lot on how to problem solve, think critically, and how to work effectively with a team in order to get the project done efficiently. Another skill I was able to work on was public speaking, as at the end of our design process, we have to present our project to a panel of judges! Overall, it was a fun yearlong experience and I learned a lot through this class and project.

I would say stay focused on your long term goals. Having these goals will give you motivation to succeed and can help with time management to keep a good balance between school and extracurriculars! Goals can also be a way to learn from any mistakes you may make so make sure to use those opportunities as ways to grow and remind yourself of that bigger picture.

What is the most important thing you learned in high school?
The importance of collaboration. No one is going through this alone, and oftentimes it is best to build relationships, and go through hardships with one another. Whether it's a school project, or something bigger, my peers and I have been there for each other every step of the way. With this, I will enter college hoping to create meaningful relationships similar to the ones I've created at Bartlett.
What is your favorite high school memory?
Bartlett High School's SASA Show was an awesome experience. We were able to perform various cultural dances and a skit for the audience. The show was a culmination of a year's hard work put together and planned by students. Nothing beats the feeling and exhilaration one gets onstage!
What was your favorite class or learning experience?
The most impactful learning experience was the Academy and the classes within. Freshman through senior year, as students, we were able to build upon our knowledge. Concepts we once learned have been applied in our "passion" projects such as a portable water filter or air hockey table. This is my favorite experience, because we've learned to persevere and work through problems. In addition, our projects and hard work represent our passion for what we do. I've had the most fun working with others for my Junior year EDD class and Senior Year Tech project.

Take advantage of the opportunities presented, and get involved in clubs and sports. Don't be afraid to try something new! Time really does go by in the blink of an eye, so take advantage of the four memorable years of high school!
What or who do you acknowledge for your academic success, and ranking in the top 2 percent of your senior class?
My academic success can be contributed to my family, for supporting me along the way and motivating me to be the best version of myself. I also acknowledge my peers at BHS, for being amazing shoulders to lean on and collaborate with.
What life lessons or observations have you gained about yourself, and the world, during the 2023-24 school year?
From this year, I've taken away that an outcome doesn't define who I am. As long as I know I worked as hard as I could to achieve it, that is enough reason to be proud. I've also learned that in the process of achieving these outcomes, it's important to take in the moment, because these are special times.

What is your intended major and/or minor?
I plan pursuing a public health/health sciences major with a minor in bioengineering on the pre-med track.
What is the most important thing you learned in high school?
The most important thing I learned in high school was to be open minded and to step out of my comfort zone. It is only then that I found activities that I have truly enjoyed and experiences that have taught me important life skills and lessons.
What is your favorite high school memory?
My favorite high school memory was the STEM Academy final project showcase during the end of my junior year. From working on a project the entire year, to being able to present it to an audience, the experience was really rewarding. Going through the entire engineering process to then receiving feedback from real engineers themselves was very enriching and a great experience to real-world scenarios. However, I couldn't mention that day without talking about all the pizza we ate after the showcase concluded as a reward to all our hard work!
What was your favorite class or learning experience?
My favorite learning experience was the internship I was able to participate in through the U-46 Alignment Collaborative. During the summer before my senior year, I was an intern at a local non-profit organization in Elgin called the Well Child Center. This organization provides dental services for kids without insurance as well as nutritional services to low-income families. It was here where I truly learned how socioeconomic disparities can impact communities and families as well as how great the need for adequate healthcare and dietary solutions is for under-resourced communities. During my time with the organization, I was able to help out at a pop-up dental clinic at a local Boys and Girls Club in the area as well as assisting at neighborhood food drives. This introduction and immersion into community health was the reason I chose to pursue a public health major in college and why I will continue to advocate for public health initiatives in my future.

A piece of advice I would give is to be ready for change and don't be scared to invite it in! Highschool is a place where you can truly explore all of your interests, and this could lead you down paths you never envisioned for yourself. Having new experiences and meeting new people is how we grow so don't be hesitant to take certain classes or to join certain clubs because at the end of the day, you'll never know what awaits!
What or who do you acknowledge for your academic success, and ranking in the top 2 percent of your senior class?
I would like to acknowledge my parents for pushing me to do my best in everything I participated in. Their determination in supporting me through my academics has been unwavering and this achievement wouldn't have been possible without them. I would also like to acknowledge my teachers in high school that never hesitated to answer questions or provide extra help when needed. However, I would also like to acknowledge my elementary school teachers for believing in my potential to achieve more and instilling the confidence in me to take the initiative.
What life lessons or observations have you gained about yourself, and the world, during the 2023-24 school year?
We never know what others are going through. However, everybody is traveling their own path filled with their own challenges, lessons, and accomplishments so it is on us to be empathetic and patient with one another. We should be open to learning new perspectives and listening to others to truly be a better person and friend in the world.

I have been on the school's VEX Robotics team for all of high school, and we had a great time at this tournament competing with robots from various schools. It felt like the culmination of all of our work and robotics experience.
What was your favorite class or learning experience?
I have had many great classes throughout high school, but my favorite was likely Engineering Design and Development with Ms. Knapp during my junior year. It's how they (along with all other experiences we face) are applied into our daily lives and into our future, so we can all fulfill our duties as citizens. What is the most important thing you learned in high school?
“You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start in order to be great.” A favorite quote of my cross country coach, the message really rings clear. As simple as it may be, putting your all into everything you do will take you places. Set a goal for yourself and work to achieve it. You might stumble along the way, but sticking with it will make it all the worthwhile.
What is your favorite high school memory?
I was lucky enough to go to Greece and Italy with my friends over spring break. Having the chance to see the Colosseum, Pompeii, the Parthenon, and Delphi with them was absolutely incredible!
What was your favorite class or learning experience?
International travel is the greatest learning experience possible. Over the summer I went to Spain with my Spanish class in order to get hands on experience speaking to others in another language. Learning about a location and seeing it in person are completely different experiences. There’s no better learning experience than getting to taste the food of another country and talk with people that live a completely different life than you do.
Share your best advice for incoming freshmen:
Get involved. Some of my favorite high school experiences (going to Wisconsin Dells with the Cross Country team and qualifying for the state Science Olympiad competition) were only possible because I was involved with other activities. I got to meet so many incredible people that I could connect with. Clubs and sports are what make school worth going to; they’re the way one can find a sense of belonging at school.
What or who do you acknowledge for your academic success, and ranking in the top 2 percent of your senior class?
I attribute my success to my cross country coach. Always a positive force, he really helped to teach me that success comes slowly and only to those that remain dedicated, to always try your best, and to get back up and keep running even if you stumble or fall.
What life lessons or observations have you gained about yourself, and the world, during the 2023-24 school year?
Life and school work often get in the way and can make things hard and stressful. It’s easy to focus in on that and get yourself stuck in a funk. Focus on the things going right now, even if it seems like there isn’t anything. Life is too short to spend it worrying about everything. Find the things that really make you happy and carry those things with you forward.

My parents for their constant support and encouragement. My siblings for providing a distraction from schoolwork when I needed a mental break most. And my teachers for their dedication towards explaining concepts until I was able to grasp them.
What life lessons or observations have you gained about yourself, and the world, during the 2023-24 school year?
With the current events in the world and the millions of people who are struggling to find access to basic necessities, I've learned to not take the blessings around me for granted.

What is the most important thing you learned in high school?
I learned the importance of exploration, of going after anything and everything you could possibly want because you need to learn and do new things to figure out exactly what kind of life you're going to live.
What is your favorite high school memory?
After prom last year, my friends all met at one of our houses and had a bonfire. We stayed there until two or three in the morning, talking and listening to music - apparently too loudly, because we got the cops called on us. He was very amused to find just four of us hanging out in a backyard rather than the raging party he expected. I couldn't stop laughing for a long time afterward, and I still laugh when I think of it now.
What was your favorite class or learning experience?
Introduction to sociology. I had a table full of friends and a great teacher.

Academic achievement isn't everything. Your happiness comes first, every time, and don't listen to anyone who tells you anything different. Ambition and drive are worthless if there's nothing behind them, if you don't want what's at the end of the road.
What or who do you acknowledge for your academic success, and ranking in the top 2 percent of your senior class?
My friends, who kept me sane and reminded me that there's more to life than working and waiting.
What life lessons or observations have you gained about yourself, and the world, during the 2023-24 school year?
You can't get everything you want, but that doesn't mean there's nothing out there for you at all. If you keep reaching for it, one day you'll find something there, and it'll all pay off. It doesn't matter how many times you lose. Life is all a roll of the dice anyway; at least once, you're bound to roll well.

I really enjoyed our percussion band only class at EHS because it gave the drumline an opportunity to grow together as people and musicians.

What is the most important thing you learned in high school?
The most important thing I learned in high school was to find the right group of people and stick with them. Friends are gonna come and go but if you find the right group, fight to stay with them. They are the people you can go to when everything is confusing- they will be there for you. Don't take that for granted
What is your favorite high school memory?
My favorite high school memories are the ones that involve sports. Whether it was when I was actually competing, managing or just going and being a part of the student section it was always a great time. Getting to see the school spirit and dress up at games or looking in the stands and seeing my friends while I was competing always made me smile. I wouldn't change that experience for anything.

What life lessons or observations have you gained about yourself, and the world, during the 2023-24 school year?
A life lesson that I learned in the 2023-2024 school year is that when you work hard and set your goals high it doesn't matter what other people think. Other people are going to talk no matter what. You just need to keep your sight set on your goals and do your own thing to get there. Don't let them distract you, its your life not theirs- so their comments don't matter as much as you might think they do.

What is the most important thing you learned in high school?
I have learned that life and your experiences are what you make of them. This has taught me to live every moment in the fullest. Just this past Monday, I was sitting on the track with my closest friends and all I could think about was the fact that I was able to experience a spectacular phenomenon with the people I love. There was no where else in the world I would've rather been in those moments, and I strive to feel that way every day that I can. Sitting in rehearsals, attending games with my friends, studying in the library, I cherish the memories that are created, knowing that it is one of the last times I will be able to share my moments with these people, but it also excites me to think about what next year will hold.
Looking back at my camera roll, these past four years have held so many emotions, but there is an overwhelming amount of media that I have saved that I hold incredibly close to my heart. Even moments that I didn't have the best first experience, I am able to look back and feel positively about my time. I am proud of my experiences, and they have granted me a large sense of fulfillment.
I know that it is also possible to have the opposite outlook on my time. It is easy to focus on the negatives, and feel like you could've done more or been happier. But that is not that way to live, and it was a learning experience to figure it out.
What is your favorite high school memory?
My favorite memory of high school has been my time spent in the Band Room, creating music with a community of close knit people who share the same drive as I do. Being with the people I cherish in a place that brings me joy feels like a warm hug, and it is amplified tenfold by the ability to create beautiful melodies.
I remember my sophomore year, Mr. Lambert, our band director, described what he calls a "sound bath", where the music completely engulfs you, like submerging your head completely underneath the water. We were listening to "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral", and preparing to play it at our upcoming concert, and I didn't understand what he meant at first. How can music have such a grasp on you?
But, soon enough, I was engulfed in the sound and I knew. I understood the feeling of being so full of emotion, almost brought to tears from something so simple as the manipulation of the sound waves. Ever since that day, I have been chasing that feeling, and what I would give to go back and hear that piece for the first time again. It was that moment that solidified my ever growing desire not just for learning, but for music. I have thrown myself into my studies and my instruments, spending hours practicing until my face is so numb I physically cannot produce a sound on my horn anymore, or until my calluses are so sore that I cannot stand to pluck another bass string, or until I am so cross eyed that the notes and words on the page no longer make any sense. It feels like the climax of "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral", the acknowledgement of the fight and the struggle to get there, the completely engulfing pride you feel when you are there.
What was your favorite class or learning experience?
My favorite class was from sophomore year. I took my first AP class, U.S. History, taught by Mr. Connelly. It was an incredibly difficult class, testing my time management and self-drive as the sheer amount of work and material to cover was incredible. I loved every minute, even as I begged for a break, just for one week.
I knew I loved it because Mr. Connelly reminded me of my dad, and the conversations we would have as we spent our evenings in elementary school watching the Science Channel. We would talk for hours nightly about whatever was on TV, and my dad would eventually find a way to connect that whatever to some new fact about him. In Mr. Connelly's classroom, in between the furious, wrist-aching notes, these same conversations would occur. "Why?" was a constant question, from myself, from my classmates, and from Mr. Connelly.
One specific memory is about Mr. Conelly's love for a sharpened pencil. He's so passionate about it, in fact, that he has a guide to sharpening the best pencil locked in his filing cabinet. I found it silly at first, but looking back at it a year and a half later, I can understand. Mr. Connelly's pencil was teaching. He was so dedicated to it that he was working to perfect it, locking his manual away in a filing cabinet so that no one could steal it from him.
For me, my pursuit of knowledge is my pencil. It's hard to learn that perfection isn't perfect, but it's the drive to get there that fuels the passion.
Share your best advice for incoming freshmen:
This is the time of life to try new things, and to make mistakes. Throughout my time at highschool, I had many different friends, different interests, likes and dislikes. It can be easy to get caught up in the person you are currently, but this time is full of changes and you are constantly changing. I leaned into this process a lot, and reinvented myself tens of times, and each time has brought me closer to my true self. I was taught a lot about my values and my likes/dislikes because I tried a lot and told myself it was okay to not like everything (especially when a friend likes it).
I did a lot of these things for myself, and was happy to have a friend to accompany me, but it was not a deal breaker to be alone. My greatest advice I could ever give would be to try it, even if you are afraid or alone. I tell my friends all time, you never know unless you try and the worst thing someone can say is "no". And if they do, you go home, and it's okay to cry about it, but you get back up and try again.
What or who do you acknowledge for your academic success, and ranking in the top 2 percent of your senior class?
I would like to thank my parents, Dave and Deb, for their unwavering support and constant encouragement. They have never doubted my abilities and have consistently pushed me to be more and do more.
My teachers throughout my education have recognized my desire to learn and they have pushed me to go above and beyond the classroom. Namely, Mrs. Boes, Mr. Lambert, and Mrs. Overholt, have all gone out of their way to ensure that my presence in their classroom is welcome and cherished. They see their students as people, and take time out of their day to check in with their students and have conversations with them. I greatly appreciate everything that they have done to ensure my success outside of highschool.
What life lessons or observations have you gained about yourself, and the world, during the 2023-24 school year?
Throughout my time in high school, I have prided myself on my work ethic, always making sure that my assignments are turned in and I take the time to study for tests. But especially this past year, I've learned that I cannot be successful without the hard work. The fall semester was incredibly busy, as I was not only balancing the load of my extracurriculars on top of my classes, but I had the addition of college applications. I was writing multiple essays a week to keep up with my workload, and reading multiple chapters of my textbooks a night, on top of performing with the marching band after school. And, I know that had I not worked hard the last few years, I would not have had I foundation that I did to maintain my work and stress loads.
This spring semester has proved a different beast, as there is less class work, but the stress of upcoming AP tests, final grades, and scholarship deadlines is ever growing. I'm finding myself doubling down and fueling my motivation with the knowledge that it has never done me wrong. It is incredibly difficult to keep up, it has meant saying "no" to going out with my friends, or participating in certain activities, but it has lead me to success. It got me into my top colleges and I have been recognized by multiple different organizations because of my merits.

Fitting in does not matter, you'll find your people one way or another. Just try things.

What is the most important thing you learned in high school?
Academics are important, but having a good time in high school is just as important; find the balance in doing well academically while simultaneously making positive memories throughout all four years of high school.
What is your favorite high school memory?
There are countless memories that I cherish from my time at high school, but one high school memory that stands out is participating in the HOSA competition with Larkin's HOSA Chapter in Springfield, IL during my junior and senior years. This event offered me a platform to explore my passion for medicine while also creating some wonderful memories with my HOSA team.
What was your favorite class or learning experience?
I genuinely enjoyed all of my classes throughout my four years of high school - however, if I had to pick one, it would be AP United States Government and Politics. As a student who is interested in pursuing a career in medicine and knew nothing about the government or politics before joining this class, I found this class to be quite intriguing. The topics we learned in this class can be applied to practically every aspect of life, making it even more fascinating, even for those who are not interested in Political Science.

What is the most important thing you learned in high school?
The most important skill I learned was definitely being more comfortable with social situations. Through the speech team and the support of my friends, I've become much more confident in speaking in my day-to-day life and in public speaking situations.
What is your favorite high school memory?
My favorite memory from high school was probably going to state for speech in 2024. I did get super sick during it, but it was still so much fun! I loved being surrounded by talented people who were all interested in the same thing as me, and I also loved the free food, of course.
What was your favorite class or learning experience?
Unsurprisingly, my favorite class was my Visual Arts Academy class. I especially enjoyed my senior year, where we had so much freedom to create the art we wanted how we wanted. It really allowed me to experiment and push myself to be a better artist.

What or who do you acknowledge for your academic success, and ranking in the top 2 percent of your senior class?
Honestly, I'd say I'd have to credit my third grade teacher, Mrs. Hansen, for being the first person to really look at me and see academic potential. Also, shout out to my friends for making some of the rougher times bearable and helping me keep going.
What life lessons or observations have you gained about yourself, and the world, during the 2023-24 school year?
This year, I've learned a lot more about taking control of my own life. Between getting my license, applying for college, and turning 18, I've gained a lot more independence and courage to advocate for myself. (Like, I'm sometimes able to make a phone call now. I know, impressive.)

What is the most important thing you learned in high school?
The most important thing I learned in school was to be versatile. The more activities and educational subjects you can become familiar with, the better off you will be. When one thing doesn't go your way, it’s much better to have other activities and interests to fall back on, than to invest yourself solely in one thing.
What is your favorite high school memory?
My favorite memory is winning sharks and minnows with the swim team this year, and getting to know all the new people on the team and make memories with them.
What was your favorite class or learning experience?
My favorite class out of my entire high school career was AP Bio, because it helped me to realize my passion in life and ultimately, what I wanted my major to be. Never had I felt more prepared for an AP exam than for AP Bio thanks to Mrs.Huisinga. I especially enjoyed the classroom environment which can partially be credited to the amazing people I met that year.

My advise to freshman would be to take an active role in your life. This may sound like a weird concept, but to truly get the most out of high school you need to take every opportunity to advocate for yourself, make friends, take chances, try new things, work for what you want, and keep trying when you fail. Don't just go with what everyone else is doing or what you’ve always done. Take every chance to be better for yourself and others.

I would like to thank my sister for being the guinea pig of the family and trying things out before I got the chance to. I have her to thank for my decision of not taking AP Physics, causing me to choose AP Biology instead, which lead to finding my passion.
What life lessons or observations have you gained about yourself, and the world, during the 2023-24 school year?
One of the greatest lessons I have learned in my life is that it takes time to make truly good friends. Having best friends is not something you can rush, even though sometimes it seems that everyone is instantly able to form cliques and groups in high school, don't fall for that illusion. Don't put effort into one sided friendships with people who would drop you in a second just to be friends with someone more popular, trust me I’ve tried that, it doesn’t go well. And lastly, don’t let popular kids tell you popularity doesn’t exist anymore, it’s alive and well.

Enjoy every moment as time goes by faster than you may think.
What or who do you acknowledge for your academic success, and ranking in the top 2 percent of your senior class?
My peers. Often times attempting to earn a spot within the top two percent comes with a lot of competition. This generally results in many attempting to get ahead by any means possible and ultimately causes a lack of collaboration. This however, was not the case. Everyone in my class was always willing to extend a helping hand. We rooted for the success of one another and this I feel is what led to the success that I had.
What life lessons or observations have you gained about yourself, and the world, during the 2023-24 school year?
Sometimes deviating from the original plan can be the best plan. Your goals and ambitions may need to be adjusted and that is okay. These adjustments may help you to see who and what you want to be, so don’t be afraid to pivot.

What is the most important thing you learned in high school?
The most important thing I've learned during my time in high school was how important a work/life balance is. As a Top 2% student, it is obvious that my education is extremely important to me. I have worked very hard to get where I am as a student today. However, over the years I've learned how that hard work must be supported by relaxation time and doing things just for fun. High school has given me the chance to find a balance between working hard and enjoying my everyday life.
What is your favorite high school memory?
My favorite high school memory was my school band field trip to Florida. It allowed me to lead my band in Disney as the head drum major and spend quality time with my close friends in Florida!
What was your favorite class or learning experience?
My favorite class was AP Calculus AB for many reasons. First off, I loved my teacher and thought that he was phenomenal at explaining content in an understanding way while making it fun. With that, he also made our classroom environment a place for collaboration which allowed me to grow closer and work better with my peers. My favorite subject and type of content was just heightened by a positive environment and group of people.

Work as hard as you can. Do everything that you can do to set yourself up for success. However, never at the expense of your mental health or happiness.
What or who do you acknowledge for your academic success, and ranking in the top 2 percent of your senior class?
I am extremely grateful to my teachers at South Elgin for allowing me to be so successful in my education. They set me up to have the best education possible and learn as much as I can. My parents and family helped push me to being the best student I can be and value the things I get to learn in the classroom. I also am proud of myself for my hard work and dedication that has gotten me to this point.
What life lessons or observations have you gained about yourself, and the world, during the 2023-24 school year?
Over this past year, I have learned so much about myself and the world we live in. I have found myself through the values I believe in, the people that I surround myself with, and by the work I do. I have learned how to push myself without breaking. Most of all, I have solidified my passion for teaching over this past year and have no doubt in it being my life's calling.

Take each day at a time. Don’t stress about what you’re going to be doing next semester or even next week because high school goes by so fast and the things you stressed about won’t matter as much as the things you enjoyed.
What or who do you acknowledge for your academic success, and ranking in the top 2 percent of your senior class?
My parents, friends, and coaches are all a major part of reaching this accomplishment. Throughout my four years everyone encouraged and supported me as well as they can and celebrated each of my accomplishments. I wouldn’t have been able to do it on my own.
What life lessons or observations have you gained about yourself, and the world, during the 2023-24 school year?
This school year has taught me that life is everything you make it. No matter what situation you’re in, you have to remember it’s only temporary and you need to look for the positives and make the most of it. You will find yourself in a good place surrounded by good people if you take the time to make it that way.

What is your favorite high school memory?
My favorite memory is rivalry week of my senior football season. We won the game on one of the worst-weather days of the year (mud, rain, wind, etc...). We played the game in white uniforms which were thoroughly stained with mud by the end of the game. Also, the atmosphere of the game was unmatched due to the student section, the weather, and the nature of it being a rivalry game.
What was your favorite class or learning experience?
My favorite learning experience was second semester of freshmen year. This was when we were allowed back to in-person learning and I got to truly experience high school for the first time.

Don't fall behind early. Freshman year seems like such a small part of high school and plenty of people think that it won't matter in the long run but it does. It's important to develop time management skills, a good schedule, and start high school with good grades as it will benefit you later on.
What or who do you acknowledge for your academic success, and ranking in the top 2 percent of your senior class?
I think my parents have contributed the most to my academic success. My parents have always expected the best from me in everything I do even though it may require much more time and effort.
What life lessons or observations have you gained about yourself, and the world, during the 2023-24 school year?
One lesson I have learned from this past school year is to appreciate everything you are able to do. Don’t miss out on key moments of your life because those memories are irreplaceable.

What is the most important thing you learned in high school?
The most important thing I learned in high school was to enjoy the present. When I started Freshman year, all I wanted was to graduate and go to college, I wanted to grow up. However, looking back at what I have been able to accomplish, and the amount of memories I have been able to make at South Elgin High School, I wish I had spent a little more time in the moment instead of worrying about my future. Finally, as a senior, I am learning to cherish the time I have left, learning from my previous faults. While it may be too late to restart my high school career, I will be taking this lesson with me when I go to college, ensuring that I don't repeat the same mistakes, and taking my time enjoying every moment, no matter how minute it may seem while I'm living it.
What is your favorite high school memory?
My favorite high school memory was when I won HOSA State for CPR/ First Aid at the 2024 SLC! It was a goal I have been working towards for a couple years, even gaining my CPR instructor certification in the process, making the win feel highly satisfactory and surreal. Can't wait to compete in Houston this summer at internationals!
What was your favorite class or learning experience?
My favorite class was my AP Chemistry class my senior year. The class truly feels like a family and it's what really taught me to love chemistry, making it the subject I now want to major in at whatever university I end up attending. My teacher truly makes every lesson engaging and fun, never failing to keep us entertained with crazy experiments and constant jokes. The students are also all so supportive of each other and we genuinely want the whole class to succeed. While the zero hour may make it difficult to get out of bed most mornings, the second I step into the classroom, it makes my alarm worth it.

As typical as this may sound, my biggest piece of advice is to get involved. I have yet to regret going to a club meeting, joining a sport, or even just showing up to one of our after school events. I am a very social person, so for me, high school was an opportunity to make connections with literally everyone I met. I highly recommend choosing to participate in at least one extracurricular during your four years, it's where I've met some of my closest friends and shared some of my best laughs. Even as a senior I am constantly throwing myself into new environments, like joining lacrosse for my first ever season, because I think change is necessary to grow, and the more you expose yourself to new situations, the less scary they become. Even if you show up to one meeting and you don't like it, at least you tried, but go to one before you make the assumption that it's not for you. You only have four years in high school, make the most of them and please please please get involved.
What or who do you acknowledge for your academic success, and ranking in the top 2 percent of your senior class?
My biggest supporters on my road to academic success and the top 2 percent are my family. My parents and my brothers were there for me every step of the way and were always there to help me when I needed it. Besides my family, I would say that my work ethic played a key role in my success. This journey is what taught me the true meaning behind time management and how to delegate my hours so I was able to be productive while still enjoying my time as a teenager.
What life lessons or observations have you gained about yourself, and the world, during the 2023-24 school year?
I think the biggest life lesson I have learned is to try and stay as optimistic as possible. There's always something good in every situation. Focusing on the positive has made me more enthusiastic in everything that I put effort into because I know that there is something beneficial that will come out of my hard work.

What is the most important thing you learned in high school?
The most important thing I learned in high school is how much exploring and trying new things helps me discover myself and how I can apply myself to my community. I believe it is really important to take the opportunity given with the resources you are provided and to figure out how you want to use your own talent to create your future. Within high school, I realized there was never a “right time” or “age limit” to start investing your interests into your future, anything is possible right now!
What is your favorite high school memory?
My favorite memory of high school was performing in Culture Show my sophomore year.
What was your favorite class or learning experience?
My favorite learning experience was the entire year of taking Physics C. It wasn’t my favorite class, but it taught me how to apply myself to different studying methods, failure and how I choose to pick myself up from it, and the importance of reaching out to others to help understand the class more (how two brains are better than one!).
Share your best advice for incoming freshmen:
Take every opportunity you can and apply yourself to exploration. High school has many opportunities that you get to experience, whether it’s immersing yourself within student diversity or learning how become your own person. There is many resources to grow, find what suits you best, and have support for mistakes you make. So don’t be afraid to branch out and explore what your future has to offer.
What or who do you acknowledge for your academic success, and ranking in the top 2 percent of your senior class?
My counselor Ms. Zewde, she has always supported my journey throughout high school and has kept me level headed/stress free while navigating my future career. Our physics teacher Mr. Zitnik, who although never had me as his own student always left his free periods for me to come in and ask questions. I learned how to study topics differently to adhere to my learning curve and how to utilize all my resources.
What life lessons or observations have you gained about yourself, and the world, during the 2023-24 school year?
I learned about the importance of taking opportunities and expanding my knowledge of the world. There is so many different perspectives, cultures, and activities that the world has to offer and I didn’t realize until late senior year how much just in high school I can explore those opportunities. So, as my life goes on I hope to immerse myself in all the opportunities I can get- learning how to apply myself to my communities and how they can impact my personal growth as well.

Being surrounded by friends who were academically ambitious and organized helped refocus my mind when I got too sport crazy. I wouldn't have gotten far without being surrounded by others who had high academic expectations for themselves.
What life lessons or observations have you gained about yourself, and the world, during the 2023-24 school year?
The world doesn't owe you anything, but you owe it to yourself to see what you are capable of. If you succeed greatly one year, then that doesn't mean you are entitled to live another successful year in a row. Success is defined in the way you live your 24 hours, in the way that you do what you do. I've learned to base myself not off of the rewards that are up to other people to give, but by the standards I set for myself on what kind of person I want to be.

In high school, I learned that at the end of the day only you will have your back. You may have close friends, but those friends won't be by your side your whole life.
What is your favorite high school memory?
My favorite high school memory is senior year assemblies, specifically the one where my physics teacher dressed up as Rapunzel.
What was your favorite class or learning experience?
My favorite class is AP physics because my teacher is very engaging and fun to be around. He makes the class entertaining and interesting.
Share your best advice for incoming freshmen:
Go big from the start. Don't be afraid to join something whether it be a club or the talent show, high school goes by quicker than you think and before you know it you will be graduating. If you don't take the chance to have fun in school, then you will always hate school. If you're going to be in school for roughly 48 hours each week, make the most of it. Don't let school simply be school, make it fun and make the memories you will always smile looking back on.
What or who do you acknowledge for your academic success, and ranking in the top 2 percent of your senior class?
I have only my family to acknowledge for my success, specifically my sister Alyssa. She was always in my corner. She pushed me to do the most in my life to achieve the most. Alyssa listens to my constant bantering about how hard classes were, but she always reminded me to never give up. She helped me maintain a balanced school life and home life, to where I learned to successfully be a high achieving student while still being my fun self. Alyssa is truly my backbone for my success, without her I probably would have been overwhelmed by the number of challenging classes I take.
What life lessons or observations have you gained about yourself, and the world, during the 2023-24 school year?
The life lesson I gained about myself, and others is people change. People change every day, every second, every minute. While that's not necessarily a bad or good thing, it opened my eyes to realize that life isn't simply black and white. It helped myself grow as a person and helped create a better version of myself and the people around me.

What is the most important thing you learned in high school?
The most important thing I learned in high school is to not only support and believe in myself, but also my peers around me. Not everything is a competition or a race and nobody is better than one another. If somebody got a better score then me, I was happy for them and I congratulated them. I knew that I did not do the best on that test but that only motivated me to work harder and do better. The only thing we as a society should want as a whole is all of us to succeed.
What is your favorite high school memory?
My favorite high school memory would probably be any of the Senior Pep Rallies. Our class would always come together and be the most school spirited so we could come out with the win. It would always put a smile on everyone's face and just allow everyone to get a break from actual school which was always a plus.
What was your favorite class or learning experience?
My favorite class would probably be PLTW Human Body Systems.
Share your best advice for incoming freshmen:
My best advice for incoming freshmen is to crave success. It does not matter where you learn, it is what you make out of it. The only thing teachers can do is provide you with their knowledge, and it is up to you to take that knowledge and use it to your advantage taking in every second, using your voice, and learning. Nobody is going to force you to succeed, but the great thing about that is it allows you to choose. But I recommend, choosing success.
What or who do you acknowledge for your academic success, and ranking in the top 2 percent of your senior class?
I'd like to acknowledge my mom and dad for always being so loving and supportive of me and my academics. My older sister for always being there to help me when I was struggling with a question on an assignment (even if she did not want to.) And of course, my Streamwood High School teachers for recognizing my potential and work ethic, and allowing me to expand my knowledge through their teaching. The teachers that I would like to personally recognize are: Ms.Balzer, Ms.Denz, Mrs.Gordon, Ms.Hanrahan, and Ms.Mueller. Thank you for an amazing four years as your student!
What life lessons or observations have you gained about yourself, and the world, during the 2023-24 school year?
Putting myself first, being my undeniable self, not conforming to patterns that I don't agree with, never giving up, and stepping out of my comfort zone are all life lessons and observations that I have gained about myself and the world during the 2023-24 school year.
