What school will you be attending in the Fall?
Ohio State University
What Major will you study?
Science Education and Spanish
What is the most important thing you learned in high school?
The main lesson I learned during high school is to believe in myself. My teachers always remind me of my self worth and I never accepted the capability I have to achieve something I greatly desire. During my senior year, I started to realize that I can accomplish my goals and I'm worth more than what I had in mind.
What is your favorite high school memory?
Spending time with friends in and out of school. I'm going to miss hanging out with them and seeing them every day. Since I continue my journey in another state, I hope to meet new people and continue to have the same friendships here in Elgin. I'm fortunate to have met people who I consider close friends.
What is your best advice to future first-generation students?
Its not always about school. Find a way to escape school (sports, clubs, community service, etc), it's a great way to destress yourself. But be responsible with managing your time, avoid procrastination. Also, apply to every scholarship you encounter!
What is a challenge that you have overcome as a first-generation college student?
I faced multiple challenges. I had to worry about financial aid, the application process, picking which school fits me, and having the thought of leaving home. I felt guilty for picking an out of state school, but I know its a great opportunity for me and my family.
What does it mean to you to receive the Superintendent’s Scholarship?
It is a really big accomplishment. I have been a student in the District since the first grade and receiving this award is really astonishing. I've seen the district grow and as a Hispanic student, I really appreciate the district becoming more inclusive for students with different backgrounds. Receiving this award will be a big benefit entering my first year in college.
